The Flüekapelle and Lake Majingsee, through woods and mountain pastures

Alternating between woods with imposing trees, alpine pastures carpeted with alpine flowers in season and rhododendrons in bloom (late June-early July). View of the impressive rock face overlooking Leukerbad and extending eastwards on the opposite slope to the circuit. Passage at Majingsee, ideal for contemplation. In the woods, birdsong will accompany you depending on the time of year.

Description of the walk

Access from the Ringstrasse at the bridge over the Dala, on the east side. A few metres from the Ferjollet building (name on the façade).

(S/E) Just at the bridge, take a small path that branches off to the right and descends towards the stream, passing under the bridge. Then follow the path that crosses it, turning right. At the road, turn left. Do not take the big left turn, but continue straight ahead on the marked path.

Caution: If the ground is wet, it is better to take the Heilbadweg, which passes in front of the buildings (the first is the Ferjollet building) and heads north-east.

You will come to a fork.

(1) Ignore the path on the right signposted "restaurant Weidstubli". At the next crossroads, take the path on the right. You will come to another crossroads.

(2) Quite quickly, climb the slope towards Folljeret and reach a fork at the top of the hill.

(3) Take the left-hand path, which leads to a road. You will see a large reservoir. Follow the path that starts almost opposite, towards Fluekapelle. This is a pleasant, shaded path through a forest of larch and other conifers. When you reach two benches, you will see a small statue of the Virgin Mary on the right.

(4) Continue. From the mountain pasture, you will see the Majingsee (see = lake) below. Further on, there are two fords (see the "Practical information" section). Then follow the narrow path through fairly tall vegetation (pollen in mid-June, which blows away if you disturb the foliage with your walking sticks). There is an alternative route to avoid this (see practical information). You will come to a crossroads.

(5) Take the path that climbs to the right towards Mejingalp Hütte and Flüealp. You will come to a junction with a wide path.

(6) You can make a round trip to the Mejingalp hut. There, you can stop in the shade or sun, as you prefer.

(6) Return to the route and follow the path to the right. Continue on the main path towards Fluealp and Fluekapelle, passing in front of the "Hütte". Shortly afterwards, be careful to notice that the path splits in two.

(7) Follow the left-hand path. Further on, cross a few small footbridges. When you reach the rushing torrent, cross the bridge and follow the path up to the chapel.

(8) Retrace your steps to the crossroads after the one leading to the Obere Mejingalp alpine hut.

(5) Ignore the path on the left. Descend to the lake, then follow the wide path on the left.

(3) Just after the reservoir, descend the path on the right, in the opposite direction to the way you came. You will reach a T-junction.

(2) Go straight down the path on the left. Cross a path coming from the right.

(1) Follow this path to the left. Turn left again onto the road, pass several buildings, join Ringstrasse, pass the Ferjollet building and turn right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The indicated duration of 5 hours and 10 minutes is greatly overestimated.

Ferjollet building at the start: the name is marked on the building at the crossroads at the start of the circuit. Ask about parking opposite.

Refreshments available at Majingalp Hütte. It may be best to bring cash. Enjoy the rösti! You can fill your water bottle (don't overdo it!) or buy mineral water.

Refreshments (food?) not tested at Flüealp.

Chapel carved into the rock at the end of the route.

After (4) crossing two streams. Depending on the flow, you may get your shoes (or both) a little wet in the first stream.

For the second stream, the small wooden footbridge was destroyed (at the very beginning of the summer season). Crossing the stream is a little easier than for thefirst stream.

We are in the mountains! Mid-June near the Fluekapelle: it snowed late in the season, so a snowfield completely blocks the steep path at this point. See photo. You have to turn back without going to the19th-century chapel that you can see.

To avoid the path with tall vegetation between (4) and (5): climb a little further along the power line, parallel to the stream, then follow the power line horizontally to the left. Follow a slightly trodden trail that joins the normal route further on. Continue, cross a stream and arrive at an intersection.

Worth a visit

Thermal baths - wide range of facilities.

Via ferrata at Gemmipass, with a rope bridge and a rotating ladder.

Explore the Dala Gorges, with their corbelled footbridge and information panels (no text, scan the QR code!)
