Sor Valley Trail

This circular walk almost circles the stream that gave the valley its name. Very shaded, it is a very popular walk during the summer months.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the village hall, on the edge of the D629, south of the village.

(S/E) Leave the car park, head back towards the village centre and cross to the other side of the Voûte Vauban, without continuing any further.

(1) Immediately turn right onto the dirt track. This section ofthe GR®7, Chemin de la Rigole, runs between two rows of trees and is known as Chemin d’en Bosc after passing the hamlet of the same name. You’ll come out onto the Route du Barrage.

(2) Cross it, continue straight ahead and, 50 m further on, leave theGR® by turning onto the path on the left,PR®. Descend to the path known as Chemin des Pêcheurs, follow it to the left to return to the Route du Barrage.

(3) Head right, towards the dam. Follow this section which crosses the Sor; at its end, the Chemin de Grange Basse begins, leading to a four-way junction.

(4) Head left towards the northern entrance to the hydroelectric power station. Climb following the yellow markings, which follow a wide track between woods on the left and meadows on the right. Reach the highest point in a small clearing.

(5) Continue along the curve to the left, on the almost flat track, heading north-east. Pass the hut and arrive in front of a large electrical transformer.

(6) Ignore the path branching off to the right; stay on the same track, ignoring all the subsequent paths veering off to the right. You will emerge onto a bend in the track.

(7) Head down to the right. ThePR® trail descends, initially gently, between woodland on the left and meadows on the right. As soon as it enters the forest, the gradient steepens over stony, difficult terrain. The descent ends at the banks of the Sor.

(8) Cross the river, then follow it to the left, emerging into a clearing. Walk 50 m to the right, towards the path overlooking a large culvert on the left-hand side of the track.

(9) Climb up the grassy path, follow the markings which pass in front of Plan Perdu and rejoin the wide white track you crossed earlier.

(10) Turn left and walk gently down towards the village and the D629.

(11) Turn left towards the Voûte Vauban.

(1) Head straight on to return to the car park (S/E).

Sunday outing in the Sor Valley; the route is similar to that of the Hauteurs de Gravette, but a little longer, through chestnut trees, with the Autan wind blowing: a four-hour hike... with the same rocky section (points 8) still as perilous as ever...

when it's good, it's really good!

A lovely walk. Most of the elevation gain is at the start and then right at the end. We altered the final section to follow the course of the River Sor as closely as possible, right down to the foot of the dam. It’s very easy to follow using the GPX track. We didn’t use the route description.

This walk has been in existence since 1997; we did it in 2003. Leaving aside the signposting, which dates from that time and has now become almost invisible, the route descriptions in the book *Balades à pied en Montagne Noire* (published by Chamina and revised in 1997), covering the old route, and the Visorando guide, which details the new route incorporating the closure of a private path following its purchase by a farmer, are comparable. From this comparison, it appears that the Visorando guide is more detailed, but also more confusing! Part of the confusion stems from the questionable choice of terms and directions used, which are open to interpretation.
It’s a shame that the Visorando guide doesn’t include the route to the viewpoint overlooking the Roquefort tower.
Same observation as on the other guides: the red route line should be translucent so that you can see what type of path/track/road lies beneath it.

Very poorly signposted; you need to have Visiorando open to make sure you don’t go the wrong way.
Nothing to see, no interest at all; a dull walk.

The start of the walk along the Vauban canal is very pleasant, right up to the dam.
After that, you’re surrounded by trees and ferns, with no views at all, almost right up to the last fifth of the route.
You then head downhill through the undergrowth, with a few streams to cross, which makes the walk a bit more interesting.

A very beautiful route, though the signposting was average and a few clearings have spoiled the landscape, particularly between points 5 and 6. The large transformer mentioned at point 5 is a metal cabinet hidden amongst the vegetation; it is only the sound of the transformer that gives away its presence.
We very much hope to do this walk again in September or a little later in the season, when the deciduous trees have taken on their autumn colours.
