Description of the walk

Join the start of the trail at the edge of the D817 between Poligny and Le Noyer.

(S/E) Take the track that climbs to the left (west) towards the lodge-Refuge du Claret.

Yellow markings + wooden signs "Sentier D.Villars"
At the crossroads by the lodge, at the Claret signpost, continue straight on along the track towards L'Empare.
Immediately afterwards, turn left at the crossroads and follow a path. 50 metres further on, turn right to cross a footbridge and then turn left to rejoin the same track as before!
After 100 metres, you will reach the Empare marker.

(1) Turn left onto a small path that climbs through the fir trees towards Meydières. Very soon, you will see the first information board on your right. There will be more along the route.
Further on, the path joins a track that you should follow to the left. Continuing on, you will see a small spring that has been turned into a makeshift mini fountain on the right-hand side of the path. Further up, the path turns right in front of the common spruce sign and enters the larch forest.
The slope becomes a little steeper, then after a short descent to cross a dry stream, the trail climbs again and joins theGR®93at the Meydières marker.

Red-white + yellow markings + "Sentier D.Villars" signs
(2) Turn left towards Miarouze, cross a dry stream and shortly afterwards, in the forest, the trail markings leave theGR® for a moment to make a small detour to the right towards an information panel about the silver fir.
Rejoin the trail markings and continue through the beech forest, then climb steeply to reach a path. Turn left onto level ground until you reach the orientation table located in the wide bend of a track.
Admire the view over the Champsaur valley. Continue straight ahead on the descending track for 20 metres to find the Miarouze signpost.

Yellow markings + "Sentier D.Villars"
(3) Leave the track and turn left onto a path that descends through the fir trees.
Further down in the pastures, find a path and follow it to the left.
At a T-junction, turn right to continue descending. Pass in front of a "forest" (a small building that was once used as a shelter) and leave a path on the left just after it. Come to a track at a T-junction.

(4) Turn left and then left again after 20 metres. Continue along a small path that passes through a hedge of maple and white willow trees that framed an old canal. The path leads to a meadow below the lodge and rejoins the track.
Turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Along the route, Scots pines, firs and beeches grow alongside meadows and flower-filled lawns. This is the same route that the young Dominique Villars sometimes took long before he became a doctor and botanist recognised by his peers in the 19th century.
To find out more, visit the 'La Maison de la Botanique' eco-museum in the heart of the small hamlet of Le Noyer.

Until 1950, many farmers in the commune of Le Noyer had land quite far from the village and had therefore built 'forests'. These buildings had a stable on the ground floor that could hold 20 to 30 sheep. Under the thatched, tiled or tin roof, the barn could hold hay. These buildings could be used as shelter for animals and people in bad weather.

On the way back, take a look at the Saint-Étienne Chapel.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

walk taken on 19/08/25. I confirm a comment made earlier about the fact that the signs are sometimes stuck to several trees, so it is not always easy to find the right species, especially for beginners. To avoid this kind of inconvenience, a small engraving of the leaf on the sign prevents this confusion
a walk to enjoy with the family, through the forest and along paths with beautiful views as a bonus
thanks to the trailblazer

A very pleasant walk in the forest. The route is easy, but its length allows you to take the time to read all the information boards explaining the trees you encounter along the way. There is a magnificent view at the end of the trail over the entire Champsaur bocage, beneath the walls of Dévoluy. Perhaps some additional signs would be useful, especially as the link between the text and the tree is not always obvious. I wasn't able to visit the botanist's house, but perhaps that would have rounded off the tour nicely.

A bit of a climb at the beginning, but well rewarded by beautiful scenery and the coolness of certain sections in the forest.

A very pleasant and varied walk. However, the "botanical" aspect is a little lacking: there are trees, of course, but they are very common in the region and flowers are rare. However, the path, which is sometimes sunny, sometimes shady, sometimes stony and sometimes soft, is very pleasant. The cirque beneath the cliffs is well worth the effort.

A very beautiful short hike through magnificent woodland, done with my children aged 3 and 6 (which took twice as long as indicated).

No surprises on this route, with very clear signposts. You can extend the circular route by 4.5 km to visit the waterfall halfway along the route instead of starting the descent through the woods, then return via the forest road to the starting point of the walk.

I think this trail is a bit old and could do with some improvement.
I agree with you that just being outdoors in nature is already a wonderful thing.

In terms of vegetation, I was expecting a bit more than five signs on the trees. But I love nature, so it doesn't matter where I am as long as I'm outdoors.

Good evening, magnolia051,

Thank you for your comment.
I'm still surprised that you described this route as average when you say it's ideal for learning about trees.

Moreover, in the introduction, the purpose of this route was clearly defined: to discover the incredible diversity of the Champsaur vegetation.

I'm going to focus on the positive and remember that you had a good time with your family.

A great time spent with the family. Ideal for learning to recognise trees, otherwise not very interesting.

(I couldn't figure out how to add photos).
