Schusteracht North Loop Part 2 / From Raisdorf to Preetz

The Schusteracht runs through northern Holstein Switzerland in the shape of a figure eight. The 74-kilometre-long hiking trail is a reminder that the shoemakers' guild was based in Preetz until the 19th century.

The Schusteracht is divided into a northern and a southern loop, starting in Preetz. This hiking tour covers part of the northern loop. Together with the first section of the northern loop, this makes a circular hiking trail of approx. 30 km.

With a few exceptions, this part of the hiking tour follows the course of the Schwentine river. The paths are often simple trails, which can be a little damp near the water. Most of the route is through woods or old avenues.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Schusteracht

Description of the walk

Start: The hiking tour can be started either in Preetz or in Raisdorf at the railway station. The start and end points of the hiking tour are connected by trains running every half hour.
There are also car parks at both stations. A day ticket for the car park in Raisdorf currently costs €1 (as of February 2024).

(S) At Raisdorf station, we first go to the bridge on the station grounds and cross it. On the other side of the bridge, the road leads us through a residential area directly to the next junction.

(1) Turn right into the street "Zum See". Pass the school grounds and you will reach an allotment garden colony.

(2) Turn left onto the street "Zur Schwentine". Follow this street until you reach the Schwentine.

(3) Now we continue to the left. We walk through the wildlife park. Admission is free. Here you can also take a break at the restaurant or use the public toilets directly on the hiking trail.

(4) Shortly after the wildlife park, the road forks. Here, we turn right and head down to the Schwentine. First, we cross the old arm of the Schwentine, then we keep to the right to cross the inlet of hydroelectric power station 1.

(5) Immediately after crossing the inlet, we turn right and stay on the Schwentine for a long time.

(6) Above hydroelectric power station 2, the small river becomes a large lake.

(7) In Rosenfeld, keep to the right. At this intersection, there is a large rest hut on the left-hand side, which also offers good shelter from the weather.

(8) After the fire station, leave the village road and turn right towards the Schwentine to cross the "Weiße Brücke" (White Bridge).

!!At this junction, you can also continue along the village road and rejoin the Schusteracht after about 300 metres on the main road. This makes the hike about 700 metres shorter and saves you about 300 metres along the main road.!!

After crossing the Weiße Brücke, continue straight ahead until you reach the B202.

(9) There, we turn left and walk until we cross the Schwentine again on the footpath and cycle path along the road.

(10) After crossing the Schwentine, we reach the intersection that leads back to Rosenfeld on the left. Here we turn right across the B 202 into the opposite street. At first still paved, we pass a few houses. After the last house, the road becomes a path and leads down to the Schwentine. In the dip, the path between the meadows and the river can be very wet.

(11) Before the narrow road ahead of us, we turn right onto the path towards the Schwentine. Further on, we keep to the path near the river.

(12) Shortly before the Rastorf estate, we either turn right down to the Schwentine or continue for about 200 metres to see the estate from the outside. After the tour, we return to the fork in the path and then turn left towards the Schwentine.

Cross the Schwentine via two bridges. The path then climbs briefly. From here, you can see the Rastorf estate again from the side. After leaving the forest, you will arrive at a rest hut above the Schwentine floodplains. The pasture land is kept open as natural land through extensive grazing.

(13) At the end of the path, we reach a track. We follow this to the left.

(14) The track branches off to the right. We follow the farm track to the left and downhill, continuing along the path until we pass under the bridge of the main road.

(15) After the bridge, we continue along the farm track, which first turns right and then left a little later.

(16) We reach the first houses of Preetz and continue straight ahead on the road.

(17) After a few hundred metres, take the left fork at the junction to Preetz Monastery.

(18) We reach Preetz Monastery and keep to the right on the monastery grounds. Immediately behind the residential buildings on the right, we take the cobblestone path to the gatehouse of the monastery and leave the grounds again. Behind the gatehouse, we turn right onto Klosterstraße and walk towards the town centre.

(19) After crossing the Schwentine, turn right onto Mühlenstraße and you will soon reach the market square in Preetz.

(20) At the end of the market square, we now turn into Bahnhofstraße.

(E) At the end of Bahnhofstraße, we have reached our destination, Preetz railway station.

Worth a visit

Shortly after the start, you will cross the wildlife park. Admission is free. There is a large playground for children, simple catering facilities and toilets.

The two Raisdorf hydroelectric power stations are part of the industrial heritage – power stations on the water – of the Hamburg metropolitan region.
To get to power station I – built in 1903/04 and rebuilt in 1936 – you have to leave the hiking trail shortly after crossing the Schwentine for the first time and follow the river for about 300 metres between the old arm and the power station inlet. (6) Power station 2 – built in 1908/09 – is located above the hiking route.
Gut Rastorf

The former Benedictine convent in Preetz is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important cultural monuments. If you are interested in more history, you can take a guided tour of the convent and be transported back to the time of the Benedictine nuns.
