Schusteracht North Loop Part 1 / From Raisdorf to Preetz

The Schusteracht runs in a figure of eight through the northern part of Holstein Switzerland. The 74-kilometre-long hiking trail is a reminder that the shoemakers' guild was based in Preetz until the 19th century.

The Schusteracht is divided into a northern and a southern loop, starting in Preetz. This hiking tour runs along a section of the northern loop.

The start and end of the hiking tour are connected via the railway stations in Raisdorf and Preetz.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Schusteracht

Description of the walk

Start: Raisdorf railway station, Bahnhofstr. 19, 24223 Schwentinental.

(S) Our hike starts at Raisdorf railway station. We first follow Bahnhofstrasse to the right, past the fire station.

(1) Then we turn left into Rönner Weg. From here at the latest, you can also use the pictograms of the Schusteracht hiking trail for orientation. We now follow Rönner Weg out of Raisdorf and do not leave it until the next road branches off to the left.

(2) Here, the hiking trail branches off to the left across the open field. After about 600 metres, we reach a small forest. At the end of the forest, we turn right.

(3) After about 200 metres, we reach a small chapel on the right-hand side. The forest chapel "Zum ewigen Troste" is usually open to visitors. After the chapel, we walk through Neuwühren. Behind the last house is a shelter where you can rest at the edge of the field.

(4) The path forks at the edge of the forest. Take the right-hand path and continue through the open countryside for a while. About 100 metres further on, there is a bench sheltered from the wind in the midday sun on the right. Immediately afterwards, you will reach a forest. Follow the path through the forest for a good 1,200 metres.

(5) Shortly before the edge of the forest, the tour branches off to the left. We follow this path without leaving it. At the end of the forest, we reach the Pohnsdorfer Stauung.

(6) Halfway through the Pohnsdorfer Stauung, a path branches off to the left. Follow this path for about 500 metres until you reach a viewpoint. After that, the path is blocked and you have to walk back the same way.

(7) We reach Preetzer Landstraße and turn right onto the cycle and footpath. We now follow the country road for approx. 1,300 metres.

(8) Behind the Glindshof, take the fork to the left, which will take you to Sieversdorf.

(9) At the fork in Sieverdorfs, keep left. In the centre of the village, you will see some beautiful old houses. The Dorfstraße turns right and at the end of the road you will come to the old Sieversdorf Preetz railway line. There is a small rest hut on the playground by the Postsee.

(10) On the old railway line, we now turn left towards Preetz. We stay on this path until we reach the entrance to Preetz. On the railway line path, we walk past the remains of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle, along wetlands and open pastures with extensive farming, and finally reach Preetz.

(11) In Preetz, when you reach Wilhelm-Raabe-Straße, you can follow the Schusteracht to the left into the town centre or, as in this tour, continue straight ahead towards the railway station.

(12) At the next street, turn left and then immediately right at Hebbelplatz.

(13) Before the railway underpass, turn right towards the trains heading towards Eutin - Lübeck.

(14) Go through the underpass and then turn right to return to the railway line back to Raisdorf and continue on to Kiel.

(E) We end the tour at the station in Preetz.

Notes

No special equipment is required for this hike.

There are several rest areas, some of which are covered, where you can stop for a picnic.

Bird lovers should bring binoculars and/or a camera with a telephoto lens with a long focal length. The Pohnsdorfer Stauung is a paradise for bird life.

Worth a visit

There is a beautiful little chapel in front of the village of Neuwühren

The former Benedictine convent in Preetz is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important cultural monuments. If you are interested in more history, you can take a guided tour of the convent and be transported back to the time of the Benedictine nuns.

The Pohnsdorfer Stauung is a moorland lowland that was formed after the last ice age. In the 1950s, the land was drained for agriculture. Over the years, the area has subsided further and further. This has made cultivation increasingly difficult.

The Schrobach Foundation purchased the site and gradually removed the soil to prepare it for rewetting. In 2002, the pumping station was completely shut down. A permanent shallow water area has since been created, which is populated by numerous breeding and migratory birds.
