Schusteracht southern loop, part 1 / From Preetz to Sophienhof

The Schusteracht runs through northern Holstein Switzerland in the shape of a figure of eight. The 74-kilometre-long hiking trail is a reminder that the shoemakers' guild was based in Preetz until the 19th century.
The Schusteracht is divided into a northern and southern loop, both starting in Preetz.

This hiking tour runs along a section of the southern loop. The hiking trail offers a few alternative routes on the southern loop.

On this part of the southern loop, the Schusteracht mostly leads through fields and along typical hedgerow landscapes. The region is slightly hilly without any particular climbs or other challenges. It is especially beautiful here in spring. When the rapeseed is in bloom, the landscape can often be seen shining yellow as far as the eye can see.

Description of the walk

Start: The hike starts at the railway station in Preetz. Trains run every half hour from Kiel and Lübeck. There are also a few free parking spaces for cars at the station. It is about 400 metres to the market square in Preetz. This is where the Schusteracht officially begins.

If you finish the hike in Sophienhof, you can take bus 330 from Sophienhof Wendeplatz, Schellhorn or the call-a-bus service (ALT) 330 from Sophienhof Gut, Schellhorn (please order at least 60 minutes in advance on tel. 04342 3535).

(S/E) We start at the train station and walk along Bahnhofstraße towards the city centre. (If you arrive by train from Kiel or use the car park, you must first go through the underpass to the other side of the railway tracks).

(1) Once at the market square, we turn left and walk across the square until we reach the end.

(2) Cross the cross street and continue straight ahead into Mühlenstraße.

(3) At the end of Mühlenstraße, turn left onto Schwentinestraße.

(4) The gatehouse of Preetz Monastery will now appear on your right. Walk through it to enter the monastery grounds. Keep to the left on the monastery grounds until you leave the monastery again.

(5) At Rastorfer Straße, continue to the right. Then a dead-end street branches off to the right towards the sewage treatment plant. Follow this road and go around the sewage treatment plant to the left until you cross the bridge over the Schwentine.

(6) Behind the Schwentine bridge, continue right along the Schwentine. The path curves to the left and you will reach Preetz again.

(7) At Wakendorfer Straße, turn right. A few metres later, turn left again onto Rethwischer Weg. Follow this road until you leave Preetz. Now walk along the cycle path and footpath along the quiet road through the fields until you reach Rethwisch.

(8) At the entrance to Rethwisch, there is a rest area with tables and benches under the fruit trees. Here, we turn left onto the road.

(9) On the right-hand side, a narrow hiking trail leads over a bridge into the forest. Follow this path.

(10) You will come to a road called Kastanienallee and turn right into the village of Rethwisch. In Rethwisch, continue straight ahead, passing through the gatehouse.

(11) Behind the gatehouse, we continue straight ahead.
Caution! Directly behind the gatehouse, the Schusteracht turns left as a cycle path along the road. Do not go this way!
The hiking trail continues here as a boardwalk between the fields. Occasionally, we walk along the typical hedgerows and one or two benches invite us to take a break.

(12) We arrive at a small forest and continue to the left. At the fork in the path, we turn right into the meadow and enter Falkendorf.

(13) On the right-hand side in Falkendorf, there is a small rest area by the ponds.

(14) At the end of Falkendorf, we keep to the road on the right and shortly afterwards cross the B76 federal road.

(15) Immediately after the main road, turn left again into the fields. The paved path soon takes you to the Sophienhof estate. Continue along the estate grounds and you will soon reach Sophienhof.

(E) The hike ends at Sophienhof. To return, take bus 330 from Sophienhof Wendeplatz, Schellhorn or bus 320 or the call-a-bus service (ALT) 330 (order at least 60 minutes in advance on tel. 04342 3535) from Sophienhof Alte B76, Schellhorn.

If you wish, you can continue on the Schusteracht to Preetz.

Notes

The hike mostly follows well-maintained paths. No special equipment is required. During harvest time, the paths can sometimes be very muddy when it rains. This should be taken into account when choosing footwear.

There are no places to stop for refreshments on this section of the Schusteracht. There are a few benches where you can take a break. A well-equipped (8) rest area with tables and benches is located at the entrance to Rethwisch.

Worth a visit

The former Benedictine convent in Preetz is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important cultural monuments. If you are interested in more history, you can take a guided tour of the convent and be transported back to the time of the Benedictine nuns.
