Schusteracht

The Schusteracht is a hiking and cycling trail that leads through the varied landscape of East Holstein. Sometimes it is more wooded and runs along the Schwentine river, sometimes it follows the typical hedgerows, manor farms and nature reserves of the region.

The southern loop in particular offers a number of options for cycling and hiking. The options used here are the most attractive for hikers.

The centre is the market square in Preetz. From here, you can hike the northern and southern loops of the Schusteracht in two to four stages. Depending on the route you choose, you can cover up to 74 kilometres in total.

Notes

Depending on the section of the route, there are more or fewer places to rest along the way. Restaurants are few and far between, so it is advisable to bring your own food.

While the northern loop is quite wooded, large parts of the southern route often run through open fields. Some sections of the trail can therefore be very dirty, especially during harvest time. This should be taken into account when choosing footwear.

Overall, the paths are mostly easy to walk on and do not present any particular obstacles or challenges. No special equipment is therefore required.

Worth a visit

Schusterracht North Loop

  • The former Benedictine convent in Preetz is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important cultural monuments. If you are interested in more history, you can take a guided tour of the convent and be transported back to the time of the Benedictine nuns.
  • There is a beautiful little chapel in front of the village of Neuwühren
  • The Pohnsdorfer Stauung is a moorland lowland that was formed after the last ice age. In the 1950s, the land was drained for agriculture. Over the years, the area has subsided further and further. This made cultivation increasingly difficult.

The Schrobach Foundation purchased the site and gradually removed the soil to prepare it for rewetting. In 2002, the pumping station was completely shut down. As a result, a permanent shallow water area has been created, which is populated by numerous breeding and resting birds.

  • The wildlife park is located just above the Schwentine. Admission is free. There is a large playground for children, simple catering facilities and toilets.

To reach Power Station I, built in 1903/04 and rebuilt in 1936, you have to leave the hiking trail shortly after crossing the Schwentine for the first time and follow the river for about 300 metres between the old arm and the power station inlet. (6) Power Station 2, built in 1908/09, is located above the hiking trail.
