Schusteracht South Loop Part 2 / From Sophienhof to Preetz

The Schusteracht runs through northern Holstein Switzerland in the shape of a figure of eight. The 74-kilometre-long hiking trail is a reminder that the shoemakers' guild was based in Preetz until the 19th century.

The Schusteracht is divided into a northern and a southern loop, both starting in Preetz.

This hiking tour covers part of the southern loop. The hiking trail offers a few alternative routes on the southern loop.

This section of the southern loop leads along several lakes left behind by the Ice Age in Holstein Switzerland. The nature reserves at Lanker See and Kührener Teich are particularly interesting.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Schusteracht

Description of the walk

Start: As a continuation of the Schusteracht Südschleife / From Preetz to Sophienhof, the hike starts in Sophienhof. The Sophienhof Wendeplatz, Schellhorn bus stop can be reached from Preetz by bus 330 or the Sophienhof Gut, Schellhorn bus stop by calling the call-a-bus service (ALT) 330 (please order at least 60 minutes in advance on tel. 04342 3535).

The hike ends at the market square in Preetz. The train station is about 400 metres from the market square.

Trains run every half hour from Kiel and Lübeck. There are also a few free parking spaces for cars at the station.

(S) Opposite Sophienhof, at a thatched house, a dirt road branches off to the right from the old B 76. Follow this road into the fields.

(1) At the first crossroads, the Schusteracht splits into the cycle route to the left and the hiking route straight ahead. We continue straight ahead. The paved path then leads straight into the forest. After a few hundred metres, the path curves sharply to the left.

(2) An unpaved path branches off sharply to the right. We stay on our current path. There are several turnoffs to the left, but we ignore them all. This brings us to the oldest estate in Schleswig-Holstein, the Wahlstorf-Hof.

(3) Shortly after Wahlstorf-Hof, the path splits. Keep to the right. After a while, you will cross the railway tracks and arrive at Kührener Teich.

(4) Shortly after the railway tracks, there is a NABU observation hut.

The path now climbs slightly uphill. On the right-hand side, you can see the wetlands of Lake Kührener See. At the top, there is a rest area with a table and bench. From there, you have a beautiful view of the nature reserve.

(5) At the fork in the path, we now turn right onto Bahnhofsweg. Passing an old watermill, we reach the former Kühren railway station.

(6) In front of the detached station building, turn left into the forest.

(7) In the forest, you will come to a crossroads. Keep to the right here. At the next crossroads, the Schusteracht continues straight ahead and becomes a narrow path. Follow this path until you reach the first houses of Preetz.

(8) Turn right onto the street "Am Lanker See".

(9) The street "Am Lanker See" splits into two roads, one straight ahead and one to the left. We turn left.

(10) At the Birkenweg/Zappenweg intersection, turn right onto the footpath leading to the pedestrian bridge. After crossing the bridge over the railway line, continue straight ahead on the path.

(11) You will reach the Lanker See lido. Here, the hiking trail curves to the left.

(12) Behind the thatched house on the right, we turn right towards the Schwentine. We now follow the course of the Schwentine until we reach the bridge.

(13) We now cross the bridge and immediately turn left on the other side of the Schwentine. After following the Schwentine for some time, we cross the river once more and arrive in the old town of Preetz.

(14) Turn left one last time and you will soon reach the market square in Preetz.

(E) Our hike ends at the market square in Preetz. This is where the northern and southern loops of the Schusteracht meet.

Notes

The hike mostly follows well-maintained paths. No special equipment is required. During harvest time, the paths can be very muddy when it rains. This should be taken into account when choosing footwear.

During the bathing season, refreshments are available at the Lanker See lido. There are a few simple rest areas along the way where you can take a break.

Worth a visit

The former Benedictine convent in Preetz is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important cultural monuments. If you are interested in more history, you can take a guided tour of the convent and be transported back to the time of the Benedictine nuns.

Between Fuhlensee and Lanker See lies Wahlstorf-Hof, Schleswig-Holstein's oldest estate. The estate is not open to the public, but guided tours and other events take place there regularly.

The nature reserves at Lanker See and Kührener Teich are particularly interesting.

The Lanker See lido is located before Preetz. Here you will find an unsupervised bathing area with a playground, barbecue area, mini golf course and restaurants (only open during the bathing season).
