Santas Martas - León

Stage 63 of the Camino de Santiago. On this stage, you leave behind the arid high plateau of the Meseta to reach León, one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities on the Camino de Santiago. This is a fairly short stage, leaving you plenty of time to explore the city.

Description of the walk

(S) From the rest area, take the path running parallel to the LE-6615 heading north-west. After a gentle climb, you will reach the bridge crossing over the A-60 motorway.

(1) Continue on until you reach the rest area.

(2) Carry on, passing the Nuevo Camino de Santiago cemetery just before reaching a picnic area.

(3) Keeping north-west, cross carefully over the bridge over the N-601, then over the Canal de la Margen bridge and continue to the entrance to the village of Mansilla de las Mulas. Walk on to the Stop sign.

(4) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead along the small pedestrian street towards the church. Pass a drinking fountain followed by the Santiago Gate, then first turn left then right at the end of the street to continue along Calle Santa María: provisions available on the street: grocery shop and fishmonger’s. Continue to the Church of Santa María.

(5) Continue straight on along Calle del Puente. At the end of the street, after a bank, turn left onto Calle de los Mesones. Cross the medieval bridge over the River Esla and continue to the traffic lights.

(6) Cross over and walk along the footpath that runs alongside the Carretera de los Mesones, heading away from the village. At the fork, continue straight on and walk to the Mansilla Mayor rest area.

(7) Carry on to join and follow the N-601 towards León. Continue until you reach a roundabout.

(8) Carry on straight ahead, passing the roundabout on your right and walking past a petrol station before reaching the entrance to the village of Villamoros.

(9) Continue straight on, cross the village staying on the N-601 and leave the village to find the footpath on your left.

(10) Head north-west and continue to a rest area opposite a restaurant.

(11) Take the path leading from the restaurant towards the woods. After a left/right turn, cross the footbridge over the Rio Porma. Pass a sports ground before rejoining the N-601.

(12) Turn left and walk through the village of Puente Villarente. At the crossroads, follow signs for León and cross the road to continue on the pavement on the right. Refreshments available. Continue to the next crossroads.

(13) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead towards León. Walk on to the Camino de Santiago cultural centre next to a picnic area.

(14) Walk a few metres further and, opposite the Bar-Restaurante Avellaneda, turn right onto a small, signposted gravel path. Continue until you reach a metalworking company.

(15) Continue straight on, cross an irrigation canal and carry on to the junction in an industrial estate.

(16) Keep heading in the same direction (north-west). Pass under a high-voltage power line, then under the A-60 motorway.

(17) Turn left after the tunnel and continue to the lay-by at the entrance to the village of Arcahueja.

(18) Cross the village, keeping north-west, and continue to the Arcahueja cemetery.

(19) Continue along the path through the fields until you reach a fork near a scrapyard.

(20) Carry on straight ahead until you reach the junction signposted for Valdelafuente: here, if you turn left, you can rest in the church car park.

(21) Continue straight on (north-west) until you reach the junction with the LE-5610.

(22) Please note: if you prefer to go to the campsite, turn right and then left in front of the Javier Calo business. Otherwise, turn left at the bathroom showroom. Turn right at the end of the street and continue along the path that starts at a car garage. Walk on until you reach a blue metal footbridge.

(23) Take the footbridge over the N-601, then follow the road on your right until you reach a roundabout.

(24) Go round the roundabout on the right-hand side, continue over the bridge heading north-west and carry on until you reach a footbridge.

(25) Cross at the pedestrian crossing, walk past the Renault garage and continue along the pavement on Avenida de Madrid. Walk on until you reach the Centro de Interpretación del León: a yellow building that looks like a church.

(26) Turn left onto Calle Victoriano Martínez and walk to the Stop sign. Cross carefully and continue straight ahead to take the footbridge over the Río Torío. Walk to the junction with Calle San Pedro del Castro.

(27) Turn right, then left at the stop sign, onto Avenida del Alcalde Miguel Castaño. Continue straight ahead along this avenue. After passing through several junctions, you will reach a roundabout.

(28) Continue straight ahead to stay on Avenida del Alcalde Miguel Castaño. Keep going in this direction until, after passing several junctions, you reach a roundabout with the Santa Ana Fountain in the centre.

(29) Continue straight ahead, staying on the avenue. Carry on until you reach a small wooded park in front of the Church of Santa Ana.

(30) Cross the avenue carefully and continue left along Calle Barahona, going against the flow of traffic. After the pharmacy, continue straight ahead into the small pedestrian street to the left of a large stone wall. Walk on until you reach the Telaraña Cartón Piedra shop.

(31) Turn right and continue to Plaza Santa María del Camino to find the entrance to a hostel (E).
