Description of the walk

(S) From Santa María del Camino Square, head south-west along Calle Escurial, then turn right onto Calle de los Herreros. Pass in front of Santa María del Camino Church before arriving at Plaza de las Concepciones.

(1) Continue along Calle la Rúa, going against the one-way traffic. Stay on this street until you reach Plaza de San Marcelo, opposite the Casa Botines Gaudí museum.

(2) Turn right onto Calle Ancha and stay on this street until you reach Plaza de Regla. Turn left to arrive in front of León Cathedral.

(3) Walk past this magnificent building towards the Sierra Pambley Museum and turn left just before it, onto Calle Sierra Pambley. At the fork, turn right onto Calle Dámaso Merino. At the end of this street, first turn left then right to continue along Calle Ordoño IV. Follow this narrow, bustling street until you reach the Parque del Cid.

(4) Turn right, walk along the park on your left and continue to San Isidoro Square, opposite the Basilica of San Isidoro de León.

(5) Cross the square and head to the right of the basilica onto Calle Sacramento. At Plaza de Santo Martino, turn left onto Calle Abadía. At the end of this street, first turn right then left and continue along Calle Renueva, going against the flow of traffic. Stay on this street, carefully cross the large junction and continue straight ahead onto Calle Suero de Quiñones, also going against the flow of traffic. Continue to the roundabout.

(6) Keep to the left at the roundabout to join the road opposite. Cross at the pedestrian crossing and continue left into the San Marcos Gardens. Walk on to the Roman bridge of San Marcos.

(7) Cross the River Bernesga and walk along Quevedo Park until you reach a roundabout. Cross the roundabout on the left, continuing along Quevedo Avenue, which becomes Párroco Pablo Díez Avenue. Follow the clearly visible signposting along the avenue to a roundabout, followed by a blue metal footbridge.

(8) Take the footbridge to cross the railway tracks. At the junction with Avenida del Párroco Pablo Díez, turn left to enter the town of Trobajo del Camino. Stay on this avenue and pass through several junctions before reaching a left-hand bend. Continue to the San José Polyclinic.

(9) Turn right onto Calle de la Cruz, which slopes slightly upwards. Stay on this street until you reach a junction after the last houses.

(10) Continue straight on along Calle de las Vargas to pass through an industrial estate. Carry on until you reach the Stop sign just after a high-voltage pylon.

(11) Turn right and head south-west. Pass a petrol station before entering the town of Virgen del Camino.

(12) Stay on the main road to cross the town and continue in this direction until you reach the Basilica of the Virgen del Camino.

(13) At the crossroads after the basilica, cross carefully, turn right to continue along the small Calle Paz, which slopes gently downwards and runs parallel to Avenida del Párroco Pablo Díez. Keep left, on the footpath. A signpost directs you towards Fuente El Cannin. Follow this direction until you reach the sign indicating a variant of the Camino de Santiago.

(14) Continue straight ahead, keeping to the left as the road curves, and head towards the cemetery enclosed by white walls. Walk past the cemetery and continue along the footpath to the crossroads.

(15) Cross carefully to the right of a furniture factory. Walk alongside the factory on your left and continue to the bend on the left.

(16) Cross the road and continue left onto the gravel path running alongside the N-120. Carry on until you reach the fork.

(17) Continue south-westwards until you reach the tunnel and pass under the A-66 motorway.

(18) Turn right after the tunnel to follow the motorway for a short while, then head west through the scrubland. Pass two mobile phone masts before arriving opposite the Aupper factory.

(19) First turn left then right and continue in this direction, passing several factories before joining the N-120.

(20) Keep left on the footpath running parallel to the road. Continue to the town of Valverde de la Virgen. Cross the town, staying on the main street. Refreshments available on the street. Continue to the town’s outskirts to rejoin the footpath running parallel to the road.

(21) Continue along the N-120 to the village of San Miguel Del Camino.

(22) Walk through the village, staying on the main street. Follow the signs for Astorga to rejoin the footpath as you leave the village.

(23) Walk on until you reach the milestone at a crossroads.

(24) Continue along a long, straight and monotonous path, which runs more or less parallel to the N-120, until you reach a scrapyard.

(25) Keeping south-west, you’ll come to a traditional butcher’s shop.

(26) Keep heading in the same direction and continue to the roundabout.

(27) Carry on straight ahead, going round the roundabout on the right-hand side, passing a hotel and then a petrol station before arriving on the track near another roundabout.

(28) Continue straight ahead on the tarmac road of La Constitución to reach Villadangos del Páramo. Continue along this road, which runs parallel to the N-120, and pass a large wooden cross before arriving at the Bar Restaurant La Pradera.

(29) Turn right onto the small staircase in the retaining wall, cross the N-120 with care and continue left along the small, slightly uphill cobbled street. Pass the town hall and continue to the small wooden bridge over the Canal de Valladangos.

(30) Continue straight ahead along a stony path lined with trees until you reach the N-120.

(31) Cross this road carefully and continue straight ahead along the small road until you reach the entrance to the Camino de Santiago Campsite (E).
