León, a city of monuments

León is a city steeped in history and full of monuments to discover. Without a doubt, the cathedral is the number one sight to see in León. A colossal monument that dominates the city from above and captivates simply by its presence. In addition to this monumental building, you can explore the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro, Casa Botines, the Palacio de los Guzmanes, the Roman and medieval walls, and the Convent of San Marcos.
And if you have time, do take a stroll through the Húmedo and Romántico districts to soak up the atmosphere around the tapas bars.
I visited this city at the end of the sixty-third stage of my Camino de Santiago.

Description of the walk

To get to the starting point, head to Plaza del Grano in León, in front of the Monastery of Santa María de Carbajal

(S/E) Facing the monastery, head right onto Calle Escurial, then turn right onto Calle de los Herreros. Walk past the Church of Santa María del Camino and continue to Plaza de las Concepciones, in front of the Monastery of the Concepcionistas. Turn right onto Calle Fernández Cadórniga, which continues as Calle de Zapaterías, before reaching Plaza San Martín.

(1) Turn left and continue left onto Calle Carnicerías. Turn left at the end of the street onto Calle Azabachería, then turn right onto Calle Rincón Conde Rebolledo. Turn left onto Plaza Conde Luna, going round the shopping centre on your right, and arrive at Calle Pozo. Walk past the small Church of San Salvador de Palat del Rey on your right. At the end of this street, turn left onto Calle Cardiles, then right at the fork, then left at the next fork, into Callejón Paloma. Continue to Plaza de Regla and walk on to León Cathedral.

(2) After visiting the cathedral (allow 2 hours for the visit), walk round the monument on your left to find yourself behind it, in Plaza de Puerta Obispo. Head towards the Roman and medieval walls, then turn left to take the steps in the city wall. You will arrive at Calle de las Cien Doncellas, between the Cloister and the HM Regla Hospital. Turn right onto Calle Cardenal Landázuri, continue to the end of this street until you reach a left-hand bend onto Calle Convento. Continue along this street, passing Plaza Vizconde, then turn right onto Calle Serranos to reach Plaza Puerta Castillo, in front of one of the gates of León Castle.

(3) Head left (south-west) to walk alongside the castle on your right, and continue to Plaza Santo Martino. Walk to the Basilica of San Isidoro (the pink-coloured building) and, facing it, turn left onto Calle Sacramento. Continue to Plaza San Isidoro to arrive in front of the Basilica of San Isidoro.

(4) After visiting the basilica, head south-east along Calle del Cid. Walk past the Parque del Cid, then turn right after the park to pass in front of the Palacio de los Guzmanes (seat of the León Provincial Council). Turn left after the palace and continue until you reach Plaza de San Marcelo, in front of the Casa Botines.

(5) Facing the monument, continue westwards. Walk past the Church of San Marcelo before reaching the roundabout at the Fountain of Santo Domingo. Going round this roundabout on the right-hand side, take the second exit and continue along Gran Vía de San Marcos. Stay on this main road, heading north-west, until you reach the roundabout with the Jardín de la Inmaculada Concepción in the centre.

(6) Going round this roundabout to the left, take the fourth exit to continue along Gran Vía de San Marcos. Stay on this main road, heading north-west, to reach Plaza San Marcos, opposite San Marcos.

(7) Facing the monument, head left (west) towards the Roman Bridge of San Marcos. Turn left just before the bridge to walk alongside the River Bernesga on your right. Continue through the park running alongside the river until you reach the Bridge of the Lions. Turn left to go round the roundabout with the Guzmán el Bueno fountain on your right. At the third exit, take Avenida República Argentina, heading south-east. Stay on this avenue until you reach the San Francisco roundabout. Cross carefully and continue straight ahead, walking alongside the Correos Park on your right. Continue until you reach a set of traffic lights on Avenida Independencia.

(8) Turn right, then immediately left. At the petrol station, turn left, then right behind the pharmacy to head down Calle del Hospicio. At the end of the street, turn right then left to rejoin Calle Escurial. Continue to Plaza del Grano to reach the Monastery of Santa María de Carbajal (S/E).

The Landes region, and particularly the village of Léon, are absolutely lovely: peaceful, with very friendly locals, and the village has all the amenities you need
plenty of walks or bike rides to enjoy around Lake Leon or in the pine forests, with lots of birdsong. You can reach the superb beaches
We’re coming back on 10 April and never go there during the summer holidays, so I can’t say anything about how busy it gets in July and August
