Sahagún - Santas Martas

Sixty-second stage of the Camino de Santiago. This stage is long, monotonous and hot! In short, another stage across the Meseta and, more specifically, the rocky Páramo plain, with endless, straight paths offering little variety that seem to go on forever.

Description of the walk

(S) From the campsite, carefully cross the N-120 and head north-west along the footpath. You will come to a roundabout.

(1) Go round it on the left and continue straight ahead on the footpath which runs alongside a one-way road, then runs alongside the N-120 again. Continue until you pass the junction with the LE-6712.

(2) Continue to the signpost.

(3) Continue along the road until you reach the bend with the crash barrier.

(4) Continue north-west to a bridge with blue barriers crossing a stream.

(5) Continue north-west until you see a sign on the N-120 indicating a junction.

(6) Cross the road carefully and turn left, continuing to the junction by a bus shelter and a square, engraved stone.

(7) Carefully cross the LE-6711 towards Gordaliza and immediately turn right onto a dirt track, which soon leads to a memorial stone.

(8) Continue along the tree-lined path that runs to the right of the stele and follows a road towards Bercianos. Pass under a high-voltage power line and continue to a signpost.

(9) Continue north-west to a solitary bench.

(10) Keep going in the same direction until you reach the bridge carrying a railway line just before a picnic area.

(11) Continue north-west to the Ermita de la Virgen de Perales and a picnic area.

(12) Continue in the same direction, passing under the Arco Ornamental de Bercianos del Real Camino: it’s hard to imagine what it’s supposed to represent and what it’s doing there! Continue along the road to the River Arroy Coso.

(13) Carry on and pass the Albergue Perala, before reaching the entrance to the village of Bercianos del Real Camino, in front of a drinking fountain.

(14) Continue westwards and keep going in the same direction at the fork, before reaching a junction opposite the Hostal Restaurante Rivero.

(15) Cross carefully and then head straight on (south-west). Stay on this road which, after a bend to the right, heads north-west to reach a crossroads.

(16) Pass between the house and the shed and continue to the junction with the Santiago Francés road.

(17) Continue north-west along the tree-lined footpath until you reach the right-hand side of a straw storage shed.

(18) Head north-west to a picnic area.

(19) Continue north-west to the cross.

(20) Continue to the signpost marked “Laguna Bird Observatory”.

(21) Continue on until you reach the high-voltage power line and the signpost.

(22) Walk to the underpass beneath the A-231 motorway, followed by the underpass beneath a railway line.

(23) Go under the motorway, followed by the railway line. Continue on your way to the Stop sign, at the junction with the CV-195-17, just opposite the Crucero de El Burgo Ranero (cross).

(24) Continue straight ahead to enter the village of El Burgo Ranero. Walk past the church before reaching a crossroads.

(25) Carry on straight ahead and leave the village to find yourself at the edge of a tarmac road. Continue to the Stop sign.

(26) Follow the signs for Mansilla de Las Mulas to reach the cemetery.

(27) Then pass under a high-voltage power line and a solitary bench before arriving in front of a stone monument: Crucero de El Burgo Ranero.

(28) Keep heading north-west until you reach the rest area.

(29) Continue in this direction. It is here, faced with the monotony of the path, that you begin to wonder what on earth you’ve come here for. Take heart, you’ll soon reach another rest area where you can share your frustrations with other pilgrims.

(30) Get back on track and carry on until you reach Villamarco airfield.

(31) Carry on until you reach another sheltered rest area situated at a junction where the road branches off to the left towards the village of Villamarco.

(32) Carry straight on towards Mansilla de Las Mullas to reach yet another rest area

(33) Continue on your way, pass an irrigation canal and, after a bend leading westwards, carry on until you reach a railway bridge.

(34) Go under the railway line and carry on to the next rest area, located on the right-hand side of the road.

(35) Carry on bravely until you reach a stone cross: Crucero de Reliegos.

(36) Carry on to the entrance to the village of Reliegos, where you will arrive in front of what appear to be small wine cellars: small stone buildings closed off by a metal gate with bars.

(37) Enter the village: refreshments available at the entrance. At the fork, turn left, staying on the LE-6615. Please note that the signposting here points both to the right and to the left. Stay on this road until you reach the village exit.

(38) Turn left and take the path running alongside the LE-6615. Walk for about a hundred metres to find a rest area next to a sports ground where you can set up camp for the night: there is a drinking water fountain on site (E).
