Parking is available along the Route de Saint-Hippolyte, on the right-hand side as you enter Saint-Ursanne from Vaufrey.
(S/E) Follow the Route de Saint-Hippolyte then the Route de la Croix towards the old town. At the Porte Saint-Paul, turn left onto Rue de la Cousterie.
(1) Turn right before a row of garages and follow the Sentier des Sculpteurs. Head up to the left towards the hermitage and its viewpoint over the old town
(2) Head back down the same path for a few metres and turn left. Climb the steps to reach the junction with the path leading to the viewpoint over the town and the castle.
(3) Carry on straight ahead to the next junction.
(4) Take the signposted path on the left, towards Outremont. At the junction of signposted paths, carry on straight ahead to reach the hamlet of Outremont.
(5) Walk straight up and carry on to the junction of signposted paths at the edge of the forest.
(6) Follow the signposted path on the right and immediately ignore two turnings on the right. Continue straight up, then follow the edge of the forest before turning right to descend through meadows towards Montgremay Farm.
(7) Cross the main access road to the farm and follow the signposted path on the left, which descends to the Route de Saint-Ursanne aux Rangiers. Head left towards the crossroads.
(8) Cross the road and turn right onto the road leading to the Col des Rangiers. At the Fork in the road that follows, veer slightly to the right to follow a path that descends through woodland. Leave the forest and head up to the left towards the La Caquerelle road.
(9) Cross the main road with care and take the concrete path opposite, which climbs towards the Col des Rangiers. Continue straight on, crossing the road at the Col des Rangiers (you can use an underpass on the right).
(11) Head uphill straight ahead before turning right towards the Swiss Alpine Club chalet.
(11) Enjoy the view over the surrounding valleys and hills, then turn back. At the Col des Rangiers, cross the main road again and take the concrete access path back towards La Caquerelle.
(9) Cross the main road, taking care as always, and head left, passing in front of the Hôtel de La Caquerelle. Then take the first path on the right after the last building. Descend through the meadows along the signposted path towards Saint-Ursanne, skirt a wood on the left and continue straight on until you reach the junction between the signposted path and a local access road.
(12) Carry on straight ahead for about a hundred metres, then, when you reach a clump of trees, turn left and head down into the forest.
(13) Cross over the Transjurane motorway and the entrance to a tunnel. Follow the path which goes round it to the left and take the first road on the left.
(14) Leave the road, take the path leading down to the right, then cross the road further down and continue downhill. Cross the Chemin du Bel Oiseau, walk alongside the ponds and come out onto the Route des Rangiers.
(15) Walk alongside the road on the left, cross the next roundabout and cross the River Doubs.
(16) After the bridge, take the path leading down to the right. Before the bridge leading to the peninsula on the Doubs, turn left without crossing it and follow the left bank of the Doubs. Cross the Clos de la Gindrée, then take the road on the right to reach the Pont Saint-Jean.
(17) Turn right to cross the bridge and enter the old town via the Porte Saint-Jean. At the first junction in the old town, turn left to follow Rue du Quartier. Opposite the collegiate church, turn left, pass through the Porte Saint-Paul, then turn slightly left to return to the starting car park along the Doubs (S/E).
