Bourrignon circular via the Col des Rangiers

A beautiful walk in the canton of Jura from the charming village of Bourrignon, passing by high-altitude farms, La Caquerelle at the junction between the Delémont valley, Ajoie and Clos du Doubs, Col des Rangiers and Les Ourdons. All these places offer wide open spaces with magnificent panoramic views of the Jura, Alps and Vosges mountains. Very pleasant in all seasons.

Description of the walk

It is possible to park along the main street, on the tiny square in front of the church, just to the left of it, but spaces are limited.

Please note: this hike takes place in Switzerland (remember to bring your documents if you are not a Swiss citizen). The footpaths are marked only by yellow diamonds (LJ) and directional signs (PD). The walking routes are very well marked and therefore reliable.

(S/E) From the church square, coming from Lucelle, take the first street on the right, "Do l'Môtie". Further down the street, ignore the two paths that go up to the left into the village. Continue until you reach the bend where the road climbs to the left between the pastures.

(1) At the bend, leave the road and continue straight ahead on the path (LJ) that leads to the Ferme de Vâ at the bottom of the valley (you can see it a little further down). In front of the farm, take the path on the left (PD) that crosses the stream and climbs steeply through the meadows towards the forest. When you leave the forest, follow the path (LJ on fir tree) that climbs up through the pasture until you reach the road at Le Mont farm.

(2) At the crossroads in front of Le Mont farm, continue along the road which climbs in two hairpin bends to Bellevue farm. Pass in front of it. Continue to the Plainbois barn on the left in the bend. Go around it, climbing to the left for a few metres.

(3) Opposite the barn, climb over the fence and follow the path on the right through the pasture towards Les Gaubes/Asuel (signpost). It gradually descends into the forest until the next signpost.

(4) At the PD, take the path on the left that descends towards Les Gaubes/Asuel. It leads to a wide forest path. Take it on the left (LJ on tree). The path makes a hairpin bend and descends to a crossroads.

(5) At the crossroads, descend to the left (PD) and follow it for 1 km (it overlooks the pasture of Les Gaubes and Asuel) until you reach the crossing over the Erveratte stream. Descend to the right (PD), the stream passes to the left of the path a little further down. You will reach a wooden shelter.

(6) Just before the wooden shelter, turn left towards Le Chételat/Les Malettes (PD). The path crosses a stream, goes around a pasture and climbs, quite steeply at times (wooden steps), until it reaches a forest path. Take it to the right to arrive a few metres away on the road coming from La Malcôte.

(7) Once on the road, climb left to the first bend (100m), cross the road and take the path (PD) that climbs steeply opposite into the forest. Follow the PD signs along the path until you reach a picnic area on the right-hand side of the path, overlooking the valley. You are now at Le Chételat. This is where the 9th Infantry Regiment was based during the last wars (picnic area). Magnificent panorama stretching as far as La Malcôte, Porrentruy and beyond.

(8) After Le Chételat, at the crossroads, descend to the left towards Les Malettes/La Caquerelle (signposted). The path leads to a crossroads flanked by a large building. You are now at Les Malettes.

(9) At the crossroads, head towards La Caquerelle/Les Rangiers (PD). To do this, cross the road that descends to Sainte-Ursanne (road sign), go behind the safety barrier and follow the path (PD) that descends behind the building. Go through the gate (LJ) and continue along the path that descends into the pasture until you come to another path that climbs to the left. View of La Caquerelle farm opposite, above, and La Combe farm below.

(10) At the fork in the pasture, go up to the left (PD). The path goes around the top of the La Combe pasture. Very beautiful view of Roc à Cra (888m) and Métairie de Montgremay (900m). It then crosses a small wood and comes out onto another pasture. Go through the fence and climb left (PD) following the edge of the wood. Reach the large fir trees at the top (PD in sight) and continue until you reach La Caquerelle.

(11) At the first house, cross the road and take the concrete path that climbs opposite towards Les Rangiers (PD) until you reach the pass of the same name. But first, take the time to visit the Saint-Joseph chapel (1893) a little further on, which is now the Musée du Mont Repais.

(12) At the Col des Rangiers, cross the road (be careful). Take the path that climbs steeply straight ahead towards Les Ourdons (PD). Halfway up, at the pine tree, take the path on the right, go through the gate and continue until you reach a chalet with red shutters at the top (PD). Walk past it and continue along the path that runs alongside the forest to the end of the pasture. Magnificent view of the Clos du Doubs and the Bernese Alps (on a clear day).

(13) At the end of the pasture, go through the fence (LJ) and continue along the path through the forest. It leads to a large pasture and under the TV transmitter (80m high) located at the top of Les Ordons (995m). Breathtaking view from the Vosges to the Bernese Alps. Magnificent.

(14) Go around the TV transmitter on the right (LJ), enter the courtyard of the building, go around the back, go through the fence and down into the pasture (LJ). Reach the edge of the forest and follow it briefly. The path enters the woods (LJ) and descends to a fork (PD).

(15) At the PD, descend to the left towards Les Plainbois/Bourrignon. When you reach the pasture, follow the fence on the left (PD on electricity pole) then climb steeply up the edge towards the beech tree opposite, at the top (LJ). From there, reach the fence crossing (turnstile + LJ). The path follows the ridge (beautiful views on the left) as it descends into the forest. Further down, you will see the Plainbois farm in the pastures. Head towards the farm.

(3) Follow the same route as on the way up to reach the square in front of Bourrignon church (S/E).

Worth a visit

- Bourrignon Church: first mentioned in 1181, built in 1574, rebuilt in 1747-1749. The altar dates from 1753, and the Stations of the Cross (paintings by François Ignace Tavanne) from 1777. The baptismal fonts are from the 16th century.

- La Fille de Mai: limestone monolith near the border with Alsace. This rock, whose shape resembles that of a woman, rises 33 metres above the tops of the beech trees. For the ancient Celtic civilisation, it represented the mother goddess Maia. It is clearly visible from the road leading up to Bourrignon. Accessible from Lucelle via the first bridge over the Lucelle before leaving the forest (3km round trip).

- La Caquerelle: 834 metres above sea level, at the junction between the Delémont valley, Ajoie and Clos du Doubs.
The Saint-Joseph Chapel, built in 1893, currently houses the Mont-Repais Museum.
Nearby stands the Roc de l'Autel, a rock where, according to tradition, Druidic rituals took place (1.5 km round trip from the chapel).

A very nice walk, ideal for a day out where you don't want to cover too many kilometres, with just 8 km, it has everything you need to enjoy and breathe in the fresh air without too much effort. The paths and tracks are very easy to walk on, with a short gradient on the way back that is accessible to all hikers!

We did this walk on a Sunday when the weather was magnificent, sunny and 23°C.
=> At point 7: the road is quite dangerous: there are a lot of speeding motorcyclists on this bend.
=> At point 9: the path behind the building no longer exists. You have to go up along the road and further on you find the path leading down to the pastures. The signs have been changed.
There is plenty of parking in front of the school.
Apart from that, this tour is to be recommended.

A very pretty route with beautiful viewpoints. We set off from Lucelle rather than Bourrignon (easier parking) via the Grande Roche to Plainbois and then back to point 3 towards Les Gaubes/Asuel.
I agree with Bluechris on point 9.
For the return journey Plainbois, ferme Bellevue, le Mont and at the bottom of the pasture towards the sawmill, Lucelle and not Bourrignon.

Many thanks for this wonderful hike in Switzerland.
The route is very reliable, as are the explanations.
We did it on our own and it was extremely slippery, so hiking boots or trail shoes are compulsory, and I'd also recommend poles.
At this time of year, I'd even go so far as to say that the route is "difficult" because, in addition to the dry climbs, the leaves cover the stones, increasing the risk of falls.
The weather wasn't great, with fog and rain from start to finish, but we were doing more of a 'sporting' outing, so that didn't bother us. We were still able to enjoy some lovely views of the Swiss countryside.
We'll do it again in good weather this time.

Very nice walk... not as easy as all that, there are some steep climbs.
The unclear point in the description is at Les Malettes where, after crossing the road, immediately turn right behind the guardrail, then take the track on the left and then the one that goes downhill. A little further on, 200 m after the barrier, take the path going uphill.
The only negative point is the infernal noise of the motorbikes from Les Malettes to the Col des Rangiers.

A very pleasant walk in the Jura mountains, between pastures and forests, with good to very good signposting. The path is sometimes overgrown with weeds, also because it is seldom used.

Bluechris's comment is very justified, but needs to be amended: at point 9 (located at Les Malettes), you have to pass in front of the house and continue along the car park on the right-hand side of the road that leads to the Col des Rangiers. It's only 300-400m further on, after the hut (topped by a motorbike) and a 2nd crossroads, that you take the path down to the right of the road (LJ). Shortly afterwards, you reach the top of the pasture with La Combe farm well below.

A very pleasant walk in July. The path is not very busy for a Saturday. Great!

Note: At point 9 there is a change, you have to pass in front of (and not behind) the house (on the left following the PD) and walk along the main road for about 100m following the footpath signs (LJ), then take the small path that descends on the right into the forest.

A superb circuit with a wide variety of landscapes and paths.
Taken in a clockwise direction, it took 5 hours and 25 minutes of actual walking, with a cumulative climb of just over 900 metres.
Really pleasant and quiet.
