Saint-Martin-de-Vésubie - Saint-Dalmas de Valdeblore

The GR®52 starts in Saint-Dalmas de Valdeblore. This first stage is a transition to reach the starting point of the GR®.
This is a lovely hike that passes through the small resort of La Colmiane and offers a relatively easy climb, following the GR®52 A through the woods for just over 6km.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Circuit du Mercantour par le GR®52

Description of the walk

To get to Saint-Martin-de-Vésubie without a car, take bus line 730 from Nice SNCF train station (timetables are available on the Bus d'Azur website and www.alpha-loup.com/pdf/bus.pdf). You can avoid this transfer by taking bus line 746 from Saint-Martin, but it does not run every day.

(S) From Saint-Martin, at the terminus of bus 730, head towards the departmental road that climbs up to the village on the left, passing the post office and, in the bend, the town hall and the Tourist Office.

(1) After passing the large bend, continue straight ahead along the road lined with plane trees. Ignore the road on the right. Cross the bridge over the Boréon.

(2) At the intersection (sign with the coat of arms of Saint-Martin), turn right and follow the GR®52 A along the road.

(3) At the next intersection, turn left, leaving the GR® for a moment. Continue straight ahead to rejoin the GR®. Follow it until you reach the road again, after passing the water reservoirs on your left.

(4) Continue left towards La Colmiane station. Pass the altitude 1501 and continue along the GR® on the road until you reach an antenna.

(5) At the station exit, below the antenna and after the car park, take the path that descends to the left (GR®). Continue along a wide path, then a road until you reach an intersection after a campsite on your right.

(6) Turn left and continue straight ahead, following the GR® to Saint-Dalmas. This first transition stage ends at the "Les Marmottes" lodge, before starting the GR®52 (E).

Notes

To start this 7-stage circuit across the Mercantour, pick up a copy of the guidebook "La grande traversée des Alpes / le Mercantour / vallée des Merveilles" (The Great Crossing of the Alps / Mercantour / Vallée des Merveilles).
If you decide to do the GR®52, start booking your stopover lodges and refuges as early as possible. We booked in March for a hike in August.

Due to construction work, it is no longer possible to find the route at point 3. Local residents advised us to go to the Saint-Nicolas valley and then follow the GR (blue and red dots visible on the Visorando app). That is what we did.

The hike was very pleasant.

However, it needs to be adapted slightly, especially in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, as several parts of the infrastructure were damaged or destroyed during Storm Alex. Please check a recent map before setting off.

A pleasant start in the woods, a picnic area next to a pretty little lake and a village where it's nice to stroll around.
However, considering the rest of the route, and even though the climb is quite steep, I feel that this hike is a little "overrated".
