To get to the starting point: Coming from Ascain via the Route d'Ascain (D918), 500 metres after the A63 motorway bridge, take the street on the left (Avenue de l'Irrintzina) after the Total petrol station and park in the car park on the right-hand side of Avenue de l'Irrintzina.
(S/E) From the car park, walk up the avenue (south-west direction). After 100 metres, turn left into the small lane that leads to the banks of the River Nivelle.
(1) At the end of this lane, turn right and continue straight ahead on the right bank of the Nivelle. After about 1 km, turn right as you can no longer follow the bank of the Nivelle.
(2) You are now at the edge of Avenue Larramendy. Turn left to go through the tunnel, first under the railway line and then under the D810 (formerly the N10). In this tunnel, take the second staircase on the left immediately after the D810, which will take you to the pavement of the D810. Turn right to cross the Nivelle river and continue straight ahead, staying on the right-hand pavement, which leads to a roundabout at the entrance to Ciboure. Stay on this right-hand pavement, cross the street that leads to the fishing port buildings and also cross the car park in front of you, walking alongside the Ciboure marina. At the end of the car park, stay on the same pavement, which you will have to share with cyclists, so be careful. Continue straight ahead to reach the Virgin of Muskoa.
(3) The Virgin of Muskoa (Ciboure). Stay on the same pavement (watch out for cyclists) and continue straight ahead along the ocean and Socoa beach.
At the end of Socoa beach, cross the small Untxin river via the footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists.
(4) At the end of the bridge, turn right and walk along the left bank of the Untxin River. After the car park on your left, turn left into the dinghy park along the beach. At the end of the beach, turn slightly right onto the street that runs alongside Socoa harbour and leads to the gate at the entrance to the fort. Go through the gate and walk about 100 metres into the Socoa fort area.
(5) End of the outward journey. You can climb up to the left onto a kind of rampart of the fort to see the type of rock on which the fort is built. Alternatively, walk to the end of the Socoa breakwater on your right and back, then stroll along the small beach also on your right before turning around and returning to the car park by the same route you took on the way there (S/E).
. As with any hike, I recommend downloading the GPX track if possible..... Enjoy your hike, everyone! Best regards
