La Rhune from the town of Ascain

Whether you are a regular or occasional hiker, the hike to the summit of La Rhune is a must, as this peak is omnipresent in the Labourd landscape. A real challenge for some, a breath of fresh air for others, La Rhune is a magnet that attracts walkers and trail runners, climbing up all its slopes. The steep and rocky trails require suitable equipment, so sandals can stay in your beach bag and be used on the way back from your walk. If the sky is clear, the panorama offered by this summit, with its foundations in the ocean, is vast, stretching from the beaches of the Landes to the first peaks of the Pyrenees.

Description of the walk

From Saint-Jean-de-Luz (exit 3 of the A63 motorway), follow the D918 towards Ascain and Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle. Head towards the centre of Ascain. Turn left at the town hall and church square (towards Sare) and, further on, turn left towards the Roman bridge. Park in the car park on the left, where the hike starts.

(S/E) Leave the car park and turn right to go up the street. At the intersection, continue straight ahead on Route de Martzenea until you reach the cemetery.

(1) Turn right towards the church and walk along it on your right.

(2) At the corner, turn left and cross the street to pass in front of the town hall. Continue between two agricultural plots and, facing a property, turn right at the slate roof. The path runs along a hedge and leads to a road.

(3) Turn left. Take a stony path on the right. Continue through the undergrowth and turn right onto a track. At the end, continue along a narrow path. Go through a gate and turn left onto a track until you approach a house.

(4) Take a path that climbs to the right and leads to a motocross track.

(5) Turn left and climb quickly to the right after a track. The path joins a wide track.

(6) Follow it uphill, describing a large loop in the slope covered with gorse and ferns. Then enter the Vallon des Trois Fontaines and discover the summit of La Rhune. Continue along the wide path, past a cayolar (shepherd's shelter) and two beech trees. Cross a stream (plum tree and cliff) to reach an intersection (388 m).

(7) Take the path opposite and continue along a stony path uphill. Cross a stream and continue along its right bank. Pass a few rocky outcrops until you reach a shepherd's hut. Leave it on your left and continue climbing opposite until you reachthe GR®10.

(8) Continue to the right on the GR®10 until you reach the Col d'Errepausu.

(9) At the pass, take the path on the left between the trees. The final climb is exposed and steeper. Follow the switchbacks to the summit of La Rhune, avoiding cutting corners to limit erosion. Cross the railway line and you will reach the summit (905 m).

(10) After enjoying the view and the terraces (905 m), descend to Ascain via the same route you took on the way up. (S/E)

Worth a visit

(7) The cayolar:
In the Basque language, the cayolar refers to a shepherd's hut located at high altitude. With walls assembled from blocks of Rhune sandstone and large stone slabs laid on a solid wooden frame, the cayolar is a temporary hut that was used for a long time by livestock farmers. It is a rudimentary but very useful shelter in these highlands, which have always been devoted to pastoralism.

(7) Puddingstone blocks:
In addition to the red sandstone of La Rhune, puddingstone rock formations are also emblematic of the massif. These are detrital rocks (or conglomerates) consisting of pebbles rolled in rivers and sedimented in shallow pits, with a natural clay-based cement. The name pudding rock comes from its resemblance to the famous English pudding, with the round elements resembling raisins.

(9) Wetlands and voracious plants:
At the intersection of the paths, perpetual runoff ensures that a wetland is maintained. Mosses and sphagnum cover this spongy soil, but you can also find sundews, small protected plants that are insectivorous. More than 50% of the Basque Country is covered by the Natura 2000 scheme, including the Rhune massif. This scheme aims to conserve a number of habitats and species designated by Europe for their rarity or vulnerability, while taking into account the human practices to which they are deeply linked.

(10) The obelisk in honour of Eugénie de Montijo:
Empress Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, was very fond of the Basque Country and often stayed in Biarritz with her entourage. An excursion on foot and by mule was organised on 30 September 1859; the obelisk commemorates this epic journey. In 1908, the idea of building a railway was born. Work began four years later and lasted 12 years, with suspensions due to the war and technical incidents.

Very useful information sheet.
Just a little confused at first by the symbol used in the first part (circle with the shape of La Rhune inside).

Very beautiful hike.
Be warned, it's very steep, so not suitable for people who are not physically fit. Done as a family with two teenagers aged 13 and 15.

A very beautiful hike!
Do not underestimate the difficulty if you are doing it with people who are not used to it, especially because of the scree.

a very beautiful hike to do on a clear day when the view is unobstructed. It is challenging not because of the elevation gain but because of the terrain, with rocky outcrops along the entire route, making it difficult for children or people who are not used to hiking. The descent is even more difficult.
done in October and quite a busy route.
the quarry car park is very well signposted in the village of Ascain.
your description should refer to the quarry car park and not the motocross car park...

Superb circuit with a challenging finish. Beautiful views all along the route. Choose your day carefully: clear skies and dry weather.
The descent is also difficult at the summit.
A very good day out.

It's difficult to find a good car park for the start. Given how busy it is, that's a shame.
The markings were easy to follow for both the ascent and descent.
