New coastal path from Socoa to Hendaye

The old coastal path along the Basque coastline from Ciboure to Hendaye is permanently closed to pedestrians due to coastal erosion and numerous landslides.
A new path, further inland, has been temporarily proposed by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Department. This is the route described here.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is located at the Socoa car park along the Utxin. To get to this starting point by car, see the "Practical information" section below.

(S/E) Return to the departmental road at the bridge over the river and turn left.

(1) Please note: road closed in August 2025. Then take the first street on the left, Rue de Socoa. At the junction, follow the street on the right (which is a no-entry road for cars). It quickly turns into a dirt track (Chemin de Bizargorri). Join the D913 at the Socoa slip road.

(2) Cross the tarmac road with caution (no protected crossing) and take the path opposite. You will soon reach another tarmac road (Chemin de Kauterabaita), which you should follow to the left. Negotiate the right-hand bend and stay on the road, ignoring the path that branches off to the left.

(3) About 50 metres further on, leave the road and take the path on the left. You will reach another path; follow it to the right. Ignore the path branching off to the left further on.

(4) Go straight ahead, pass a large building on your left and leave the access to a house on your right.

(5) At the three-way junction (not shown on the IGN map), continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads.

(6) Take thesecond road on the right called Etxail Borda Berri (sign). Ignore several turnings on both sides, pass Bordaberri and then Antziola.

(7) Turn right onto a dirt track alongside a wire fence. Cross the pretty bridge over the Mentaberri stream on the right and walk alongside the Eskualduna campsite on your right.

(8) Cross the Corniche Road (D912), which in 2024 is not yet closed to traffic. Go straight ahead, pass close to the Basque Corniche House Asporotsttipi and continue to see the superb view of the sea and coves (E).

Notes

Driving directions to the starting point of the hike: from Ciboure, take Quai Maurice Ravel, then after passing the Utxin bridge, turn immediately left and after about 100 metres you will reach the car park on the right.

Worth a visit

The hike only describes the changes to the coastal path.
However, it is much more interesting to start the hike from the port of Ciboure (Larraldenia) and follow the route to Socoa. This offers superb views of the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz Ciboure and the fort of Socoa.

Visit the Maison de la Corniche Basque Asporotsttipi (an old Basque farmhouse), which is open to all free of charge and houses exhibitions on the Basque coast.

Visit Abbadia Castle.

Take a stroll along the paths of the Abbadia estate.

Hello, I discovered this new route as soon as it was created. While it has the merit of existing, it lacks the charm of the old route. There are few trails and a lot of asphalt until you reach Abbadia Castle, where you rejoin the old route to Hendaye.
It should be noted that all the local residents were against this project, which ran alongside their homes. According to the latest news, in spring 2025, this new route will no longer be considered an alternative route (have the residents won?). If the opportunity arises, I will try it again and get back to you with more information.

Update needed. Right from the start of the hike, the path was no longer used and therefore impassable 😭

It's a bit quiet at the moment, but I think the trail will be very busy in summer!!!
