Planfaé Stream

A short walk or mini hike, mostly through the woods, will take you to the start of the Planfaé canyoning route, which is not difficult even if the start is tough and in full sun.

Description of the walk

There is no car park as such, but there are a few parking spaces along the D15 between Coaraze and Col Saint-Roch at marker 197.

Warning: if storms are forecast locally or upstream, do not venture into the stream bed and avoid staying on the banks.

(S/E) From marker 197, climb towards the "Ruisseau de Planfaé". This is the only "difficulty" of this outing because the climb (and therefore the descent on the way back) is steep and slippery, but short.

(1) At marker 196, turn right towards "Col de Saint-Roch". Follow an old path (military, I think, given the characteristic kerbs and retaining walls) through pleasant undergrowth that is cool in summer.

(2) At marker 195, take a sharp left turn. The path is not very visible at this point, so pay attention.
Be careful, shortly after marker 195, the yellow markings are misleading and tend to make you turn right (also marked in yellow). Do not take this path, which descends steeply, but continue straight ahead towards the east.

(3) About 500m further on, you will reach marker 196a, at the edge of the stream. You can cool off and follow the stream for a few hundred metres downstream, without any equipment, through a beautiful wild canyon. Return to the crossroads.

(3) Turn right and follow the path to the junction at marker 196, which you passed on the way there.

(1) Take the same path back to the car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 777 m - Marker 197
  2. 1 : km 0.25 - alt. 843 m - Marker 196
  3. 2 : km 1.41 - alt. 863 m - Beacon 195
  4. 3 : km 2.02 - alt. 767 m - Marker 196a - Arrival at the stream
  5. S/E : km 3.24 - alt. 777 m - Marker 197

Notes

Warning: if storms are forecast in the area or upstream, do not venture into the stream bed and avoid staying on the banks.

Even though you can't really swim, a swimsuit and shoes for walking in (cool) water are recommended.

Worth a visit

Throughout this walk, you will have a view of the magnificent jagged peak of Rocca Sièra (on your left until marker 195).

The path between markers 196 and 195 is particularly interesting and on the way back you will see some ruins and remains of terraces, proof that these places were cultivated and inhabited not so long ago.

A very pleasant short hike. In the woods, ideal in summer.

As for the first 100 metres, which are a little challenging (and the last 100 metres too), we took the little path that starts on the right on the way back, which descends gently to the road 10 metres before the car park.
Thanks to the previous reviews for this "hidden" path.

A real treat, apart from the beginning, which is tough and tricky, the rest is very pleasant. As stated in instruction 2 of the hike, the trail is not very visible, and even less so when covered in snow, so a GPS with the GPX file for the hike is a plus. It seems to me that there is an error in the instruction to head east in tip no. 2 of the hike (head west, unless I am mistaken). Otherwise, it's pure bliss. The descent is as tough as the climb, of course, but if you take your time, it's fine.

For us, who are 74 years old on average, it was a very pleasant, shaded walk to the stream. A little challenging at the start.
For the return trip, we took a more pleasant path, shaded all the way and avoiding the scree. Looking towards the valley, there is a barely visible passage through the vegetation, which widens and follows an old stone path that is easy to access. This path avoids the steep climb and descent in the sun. We arrived at the circular bend in the road coming from Coaraze, about 10 metres below the car park. We will take this path next time to avoid the climb and descent over the scree.
