Description of the walk

Park in the small grassy lay-by, 150 m past the forest sign for “Route Forestière de Rothenbuhl”, on the right (RF at the junction of the D45, D45a and Route du Camping du Rocher de Dabo).

Head straight ahead to join, on the right, the Route Forestière de Muhlberg, towards La Hoube.

Red Rectangle

(S/E) Follow the Route Forestière de Mulhberg for 600 m on the GR®53.

(1) Turn left onto the sloping forest path, heading towards the pretty valley.

(2) Cross the wooden bridge over the stream at a place called Haeseler-Brücke. Take the sandstone steps on the right and continue to a junction where several paths meet.

(3) Take thethird path on the left, which climbs slightly. Continue until you reach the junction with the forest track coming from the left.

No signposting

(4) Take the forest path and continue to the junction with the forest track coming from the left.

(5) Continue to the right, along the forest track that runs alongside the houses in La Hoube, until you reach the junction with the D98d, in the village of La Hoube. Turn left onto it and follow it for about 200 m, using the grassy verge, then, after the ‘Village Exit’ sign and the glass recycling bins.

Red Triangle Markings

(6) Cross the road carefully and turn right onto the path climbing through the woodland. Pass a rocky outcrop on the left (the summit is accessible via a path at the northern end) then reach the fork in the two Red Triangle-marked paths. Do not take the path on the right marked "modified route" to reach the viewpoint.

(7) Continue along the left-hand path; after 200 m, you will reach the Kuhbergkopf rock on the left, signposted “viewpoint 2 mins” (stunning view of Dabo Rock and the surrounding area, with a bench). Retrace your steps, turn left for 30 m, then right to rejoin the Red Triangle markings.

(8) Continue along the path and, after 250 m, join the “modified route” path before beginning the descent. Pass the first forest track and reach the second.

No markings

(9) Turn right here. Further down, join the Schoenfels Forest Road.

Blue Triangle

(10) Continue straight ahead on the Schoenfels Forest Road until you reach a multi-way junction. Keep to the right and, after 20 m, take the path on the left following the “Schoenfels” signpost.

(11) Reach the Schoenfels Rock (picnic area and rock shelter) then retrace your steps.

(10) Continue straight ahead along the Schoenfels Forest Road to reach the main road and the Kempel forest house.
Continue towards "Pfannenfels Kelchfels" and, after 100 m, take the small path on the right to reach the Kempel Forest Track in Hultehouse.

(12) Follow it to the right and, after about 100 m, take the forest path on the right passing behind the Kempel Forest House (bench), following the “Pfannenfels” signposting until you reach the junction of two paths.

(13) Take the forest path on the left, which climbs slightly, and follow the “Pfannenfels” signposting on the left to reach the rock (viewpoints). Follow the “Kelchfels-Margarethenfels” signpost and turn right, following the “Kelchfels 5 mins” signpost to reach the rock; retrace your steps and continue to the right until you reach the junction with the stony forest path “Margaretenweg”, then follow it to the right.

Margarethenfels signpost.

(14) Head down the wide forest path “Margaretenweg” and, after about a hundred metres in the bend, turn left to reach Margarethenfels Rock (rock shelter), then retrace your steps.
Continue along the forest track and, at the first hairpin bend, take the grassy path on the right. Continue to the fork in the circular route.

Blue Triangle.

(13) Resume the route in the opposite direction, passing behind the Kempel Forest House (bench), which joins the Kempel forest track at Hultehouse.

(12) Continue straight on to reach the junction with the Kempel forest road, which you follow to the left for about 40 metres.

Red Rectangle with a white bar.

(15) Turn right onto the uphill path signposted "Borne Saint-Martin". Keep to the right and head towards the place known as "Martinstein" (the "Pierre Saint-Martin" picnic area).

Yellow Rectangle GR®532.

(16) Pass the menhir and the boundary stones to join the GR®532. Continue along the forest path, then carefully cross the Kempel forest road, veering left to rejoin the GR®532 marked “Hellert”.

Continue straight on. After about 200 m, you will reach the "Coat-of-arms boundary stone of 1755", located 10 m to the right; retrace your steps and continue on to reach the Nusskopf Forest Road.

Red Ring

(17) Follow the “Circulaire du Nusskopf” signposting along the path overlooking the D98d, which runs the length of the Nusskopf rock ridge. On the right, this leads to a narrow path heading towards the “Grotte du Marcel” (picnic spot). Retrace your steps to continue along the winding uphill path and turn right to reach the viewpoint (bench and lovely view of the Dabo rock). Walk back 10 m and descend the rock on the right to return to the Nusskopf forest road.

Turn right towards the D98d, cross it carefully to reach the wide grassy verge opposite. Follow it for about 100 metres.

Green Ring

(18) Take the sloping forest path on the right. Despite the lack of signposting on this section, head towards “Blue Cross”, then continue to the next fork and turn left, following the “Lochmuehl” signposting.
Continue on until you reach a multi-way junction, then turn left.

Blue Ring

(19) The forest path descends into the Grossthal valley, crosses a forest track, then joins the forest path coming from the left. The path leads to the wooden bridge over the stream.

Yellow Ring

(20) Head up to the left, towards the Club Vosgien shelter (table and benches). Continue until you reach the nearby forest track. Cross it and head up the narrow path opposite, surrounded by heather. Continue until you reach the Route Forestière du Sickert. Follow this for about 250 m.

(21) Take the forest path on the right. Continue along this path, reaching and passing the forest road to arrive at a multi-way junction.

Red Rectangle with a white cross

(22) Take the forest path on the left, signposted “Dabo campsite”, and continue until you reach the Rothenbuhl Forest Road and the car park (S/E).

The description and route are approved by a "supervisor" before being made public. The author can still improve these two aspects if you provide the missing details, in particular the Club Vosgien’s waymarking.
At waypoints 4 to 5 up to the D98d, it states “no markings”; from waypoint 7 to 8, the same applies; and from waypoint 15 to waypoint 13 (circular return), the same applies: what Club Vosgien markings did you observe that need correcting?
The Marguerite rock, whether of interest or not, can provide shelter in the event of rain; this is not the case with all rocks.
The return to the starting point via the Grossthal valley is merely one option; the other routes leading back to the starting point are similar, as they all involve climbing up the other side.
Thank you all the same for your feedback; the aim of this feedback is indeed to help us improve, bearing in mind that the authors of the walks are, like you, walkers.

The route description is inaccurate. Please avoid mentioning sections of the route where there are “no signposts” in your description and use the CV’s signposting instead (why make things simple when you can make them complicated???). The stated distance (15.6 km) seems to me to be an underestimate... The Margarethenfels rock is not worth a detour. The return route through the Grossthal valley is rather long and of little interest. Otherwise, a hike to be recommended for its unusual rocks and views. Let’s go, everyone!!!
