Description of the walk

Park in the large car park at Col de Picotalen, from Lacaune on the road to La Salvetat, D607. Please note that Col de Picotalen is written as Piquotalen on the IGN map.

(S/E) Cross the road with care, pass a cross-country skiing chalet and take the forest track. Head towards the Tourbière de Piquotalen junction.

(1) Continue along the track opposite, following the signs for Roumane indicated on the orange signpost. You will very quickly reach the Poutras crossroads.

(2) Take the track on the left, follow a developed area and then continue along the wide Chemin de Martinou track to reach the Jasse de Martinou.

(3) Keep to the right on this same track and cross the Ruisseau de Vernoubre. Continue on almost level ground until you reach the Tourbière de la Jasse de Martinou.

(4) Turn almost 180° to the left and now follow MTB route no. 5. Continue up a very gentle slope, passing Sagne Blanque before joining the GRP® shared trail of the Hautes Serres d'Oc and the Tour des Monts et Lacs in Haut Languedoc.

(5) Turn left onto it and follow the yellow and red markings as well as the signposting for mountain bike route no. 5. You will soon reach the Sagne du Loup crossroads.

(6) Keep right on the GRP® to reach, via an uphill stretch through the woods, the summit of Roc des Écus.

(7) Return in the opposite direction to the previous junction.

(6) Turn 90° right onto Chemin de Bel Vestre, then return to the initial junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Turn right and follow the route back along the same path as on the way out to the Col de Picotalen car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(4) Jasse de Martinou bog
(7) Roc des Écus: take a short climb up the rocks here to admire the view of Lacaune and its surroundings. According to legend, the devil, laden with a large sack of coins, was crossing the Monts de Lacaune. Having set out from Spain, he was on his way to buy the souls of a few Auvergnats. Passing through the hills above the town of Lacaune, he hung his sack on a tree stump. All the coins scattered across the ground.
