Roc Campanyà from Mas de Lastourg

Roc Campanyà rises to an altitude of 1,134 metres, just above the Mas de Lastourg campsite in the Têt Valley, very close to Villefranche-de-Conflent. Breathtaking views of the Têt Valley, the Rotja Valley, the Fillols Valley and the Catalan giant, the Canigou. With a sheer drop of 834 metres, it seems inaccessible... yet it is!

Description of the walk

The start is from the service road that runs alongside the N116, less than 2 km from Villefranche-de-Conflent, heading towards Serdinya and Font-Romeu. Park along the road shortly after the abandoned shepherd's hut, in a bend before the bridge (or in the small car park at the end of this service road and then adjust the first few metres of the hike below).

(S/E) Cross the small bridge over the Ravin des Horts river on foot. At thefirst fork, turn right and continue along the path for 80 m (on the left, you will descend to the small car park). On a terrace planted with holm oaks, turn right onto the terrace and follow the wall on the mountain side. Continue for 50 m and find a small unmarked path that climbs up the mountainside on the left. The path is not well maintained but is clearly marked as it is regularly used by climbers from climbing clubs heading to the waterfall 10 minutes away. Continue along the path, cross the property fence (wooden gate knocked down and lying on the ground), and continue through the undergrowth, heading due west for 150 m.

(1) The path crosses a tiny stone structure, similar to a small bridge over a ditch (which is actually the end of the old Jando irrigation canal, or Rec Nou). Go down to the right and follow the path that continues to the dry waterfall. In front of the waterfall, which is equipped with several climbing routes, zip lines, monkey bridges and handrail passages, turn right through the undergrowth, onto an unmarked and unmarked path, heading east along the escarpment, which you will follow for about 100 metres.
As soon as the undergrowth and escarpment clear, turn immediately left and climb steeply northwards through holm oaks, scree and large rock piles.

(2) At an elevation of 857 metres, turn right, heading east-northeast for 600 metres along a contour line on animal tracks (probably chamois). At the base of the rock, turn in the opposite direction (left) while climbing more steeply towards the west-northwest to begin the ascent of the last rocky section from the west.

(3) This final section is over a large scree slope until you reach Roc Campanyà.
There is no need to risk the last few metres of altitude, which cannot be reached safely without equipment. However, from here you are slightly behind and overlooking a first peak, on a second peak, just ahead and below thethird peak, Roc Campanyà.
The descent follows the first few metres of the ascent.

(4) Then head west fairly quickly through the scree until you quickly reach an old mule track, consolidated on a stone wall that is sometimes in good condition, sometimes partially or completely collapsed. It is not marked and must not be used very often. It is partially overgrown with vegetation or sometimes scree.
This narrow mule track is shown on the IGN map, at least just before the municipal boundary on the map. After that, the path marked on the map is not the one on the ground; there is an error. The actual path does not follow the municipal boundary but heads up the slope and follows sections that are clearly marked by walls and others that are completely covered in scree.
It then leads back to Les Coves (La Cova), which is the end of the Ravin des Horts, on a fairly gentle and comfortable slope compared to the ascent.

(5) At the bottom of the ravine, in the dry stream bed, the path crosses to the other side and climbs up to the Poumerjane ridge, where there is a large cairn at a fork. The path begins to widen and becomes more well-trodden. It winds for a while along the ridge towards the south, towards the summit of Pouméjane, leaving the Rocs Llisos on the right to the west. This takes you north of Roc de Poumerjane (735 m), then the trail descends southwards in four wide switchbacks to the Canal de Jando, an old irrigation canal that is no longer in use, filled in with earth but still clearly visible. Turn left to the east and follow this old canal until you reach the tiny stone bridge and the trail at the start of the circuit.

(1) Turn left to reach the dry waterfall and the climbing site. Turn right, east-southeast, descending through the undergrowth to rejoin the trail described at the start of the hike and the car park (S/E).

Practical information

Warning: this hike takes place in the middle of the countryside in a rather hostile environment: steep slopes, rocky outcrops, escarpments, scree, scree slopes, thorny bushes and a complete lack of signposts. It is therefore only suitable for experienced hikers with a good sense of direction. A GPS device may also be very useful.

There is no shelter on the route and no water in summer. You must be well equipped.
Wear good hiking boots for walking on scree.
If you are worried about scratches, wear hiking trousers. Bring a good hat if the weather is sunny.

Please note: I tried this hike a year earlier, starting a little before the small shepherd's hut (before parking the car at the starting point), where a secondary service road branches off to the left towards the terraces, and then heading north-northeast towards the rock. The ascent is much faster but very difficult. However, numerous sheer drops and rocky outcrops make the climb difficult, and I was unable to reach the top, blocked by dense oak undergrowth. The descent is even steeper, requiring several sections of down-climbing. Strongly not recommended without equipment!

In the nearby area

The beauty of the Pyrenean landscapes and the view of the Canigou massif are worth seeing!
With a bit of luck, you may spot marmots and even chamois, whose tracks and droppings can be seen throughout the first half of the hike.

Variants:
- If you are concerned about the steep climb from (1) to (4), you can avoid this section and return by the same, more conventional route:
in the following order: (S), (1), (5), (4), (3), (4), (5), (1), (E).
- Between (S) and (1), the trail enters a property consisting of terraced fields planted with holm oaks. If you want/need to avoid this section, there is an alternative route starting from the back of the small abandoned hut along the arrival road and arriving at (1). See this alternative route described on a map and in photos at the following link for another hike:

Quite a difficult route. The paths are not very well marked.

Be sure to prepare well for this outing.

I did this hike again, taking the two variants described in Practical Information.
I followed the mule track along the contour line and continued beyond it until I came to a precipice that was impossible to cross without equipment.
It was as wonderful as ever!
