Description of the walk

DAY 3
(S) After a good night’s rest at the Porte de l’Ogère refuge, leave the refuge via the rear and take the small path leading down to the left.

(1) Head down to the left towards the Ruisseau de Povaret and cross it via a small footbridge.

(2) Join the main path on the right and follow it to the Orgère farms.

(3) Take the path on the left which climbs northwards, then turn right onto the Nature Trail.

(4) Follow this path through the forest uphill until you reach a three-way junction.

(5) Continue uphill to the right until you reach the Ruisseau de la Masse.

(6) Follow the stream as it climbs steeply to the foot of the Col de la Masse (2,770 m).

(7) Continue the ascent, following the cairns and tracks across the snowfields, to the Col de la Masse.

(8) The start of the descent is similar to the end of the ascent (cairns and tracks across snowfields down to 2,600m). Join a good path and continue down to a junction at 2,426m.

(9) Turn right and descend gently down the side of the Mauvais Berger plateau to a three-way junction at 2,370m.

(10) Turn left and continue descending gently to another three-way junction at 2,344m.

(11) Turn right and continue the descent until you reach the car park at the start of the Plan d’Amont dam (E).

A really lovely route – what a shame that the directions at the end of the guide are so unclear and imprecise that they actually hinder enthusiastic walkers like us! Two suggestions for improvement: make it clear that the climb up to the Col de la Masse is long (and indeed very long); and point out that the final descent is treacherous and frankly unpleasant (with stinging nettles, slippery sections and poor visibility).

A lovely morning’s walk with some climbing. There’s a short stretch of snowfield to cross on the way up, which isn’t straightforward: don’t forget your walking boots! But don’t worry: there’s no snowfield on the way down.

A good climb up to the pass; if you’ve still got the energy, you can carry on up to Le Râteau above the pass, followed by a lovely descent towards the Aussois dams. Views of ibex and marmots.
