The central stage of the tour, with the ascent of Mount Thabor, the highest point of the tour and offering exceptional panoramic views. This stage requires good mountain walking skills, particularly for the descent into the Terre Rouge valley.

Description of the walk

(S) From the Refuge du Thabor, descend eastwards to reach the Col de la Vallée Étroite.

(1) Cross the pass heading south and take the slightly uphill path on the right bank of the valley towards Lac du Peyron. The path is relatively flat until you reach the lake.

(2) Go around the lake, then take the path on the right, climb the switchbacks below Grand Séru and, after this climb, turn west onto a flat section leading to Col des Méandes.

(3) Leave the GR®57 on your left and continue straight ahead on a steep, winding climb. At the end of this steep climb, follow the obvious path, marked with a Way of the Cross. You will reach a crossroads at a small pass below the summit.

(4) Keep to the right to reach, after a final climb, the Chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows on Mont Thabor.

(5) Continue for a few more steps to reach the summit of Mont Thabor.

(6) Descend to the small pass below the summit slope.

(4) Take the path on the right towards the west to descend and reach the Col de la Chapelle.

(7) Descend into the Terre Rouge valley. Leave the main path and follow the descending trail to reach a first plateau. From there, head right through the scree on a trail that is not very obvious, but marked by cairns and a few paint marks. Reach the place known as La Pierre du Déjeuner.
Note: shortly before this point in the scree, you can take a short detour to Lac des Glaciers.

(8) Continue along the path, which is now well marked with paint marks and cairns. You will come to the Lac Caspi crossroads.

(9) Stay on the trail to reach, via a final descent, the Refuge de Terre Rouge (E), today's stop.
