Refuge de Bastan from Col de Portet

Hike from Col du Portet to Refuge de Bastan. A pleasant, easily accessible route, completed with a child of (almost) 5 years old. In summer, it can be very hot as there is little shade along the path.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Col de Portet car park, accessible in autumn but some restrictions are to be expected during the summer period.

GR®10White and Red markings

(S/E) Head south-west towards the resort, keeping the buildings on your left, until you reach a three-way junction.

(1) Take the path between the two wider tracks. Walk alongside the Sabourès chairlift for a short while, then turn right away from it.

(2) Cross a small stone bridge over the Montarrouyet stream and continue.

(3) Step over the Pichaley stream. The crossing is over large stones, which is quite fun with a child! Continue along the path.

(4) Turn right onto the path and leave the resort. You will begin to see Lac de l'Oule (dry in October 2024). Continue along the balcony path until you reach a three-way junction.

End of the white-red markings

(5) Keep to the right, pass above Lac Inférieur and reach the junction with Ruisseau de Bastan (direction sign).

GR®10white and red markings

(6) Continue on the right at the top to quickly reach Lac du Milieu. You can dip your feet in the water, or even swim if you're feeling brave.

(7) Continue along the path for a quick climb to the Bastan Refuge. The last little climb to get there is probably the steepest of the hike, but it's still very easy.

(8) Turn around and retrace your steps to return to the Col de Portet (S/E).

Notes

This hike is easily accessible with children on a fine day (but not too hot as it is exposed to the sun).
Bring water with you as you will only be able to refill at Lac du Milieu (filter bottle) or at the Bastan Refuge (drinking water point outside).

Family hike via the Espiaube chairlift. A pleasant route, with a slightly more challenging return to the Col du Portet, but beautiful views for a picnic lunch by the lakes. We found the lake before the refuge to be the most beautiful spot to settle down.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent lakes and landscapes. It was easy because there was little elevation gain, so there were many people up to Bastan Lake, including families with children. I even saw a type of cart with a young boy with a disability, being pulled and pushed by a group of young people (girls and boys)
As I was ahead of schedule, I continued on to the Col de Bastan, 600 metres higher but with a 240-metre climb! (Yes, that's a lot for me, at 65 years old.) There was hardly anyone there, but it was worth it for the splendid view on both sides of the pass.
I would like to clarify something about access to the Portet pass car park, as it is not mentioned on Visorando: after 8.30 a.m. and until the end of the afternoon, the road is closed, so you have to take the cable car (€11.50 return) which will drop you a few hundred metres from the Portet pass. Enjoy your hike, everyone.

This hike is a must. The three lakes of Bastan are magnificent. Hike via the Portet Pass. Please note that access to the car park at the pass is restricted. The road is closed in summer after 8.30 a.m. Otherwise, access is via the chairlift. The arrival at the upper lake is a feast for the eyes.

A very beautiful hike, the trail after Lake L'Oule winds through stunning carpets of rhododendrons in bloom at the end of June!

A superb walk with no difficulty whatsoever! No GPS required: just follow the GR10 trail from the start.

Departure from Saint Lary Soulan was difficult; the GPS seemed lost on the way to the starting point.
Be sure to take the right turn onto the pastoral road with barriers.
