Start from the car park on Rue Dillard on the outskirts of Saint-Saëns, just before the ZI des Aulnaies industrial estate, opposite the equestrian centre.
(S/E) Head towards the centre of Saint-Saëns on Rue Dillard. Take the3rd left onto Rue Pierre Brossolette.
(1) Take the2nd left, Chemin aux Galets (red and yellow markings). This is the first climb. Continue along the Route Forestière d'Haussez.
(2) At the Haussez forest junction, turn right onto Route Forestière de la Fonte and continue to the D12.
(3) Turn sharply left onto the Route Forestière du Lihut.
(4) At the junction with the Route forestière des Meuniers, turn right onto a sloping track between plots 308–312 and continue to the Route forestière des Limousins.
(5) At the Carrefour Georges Bénard, turn left onto Route du Fond Saint-Étienne for approximately 600 m.
(6) Take the diagonal path on the right between plots 293 and 294. When you reach the Route Forestière des Limousins again, turn left and continue for 150 m.
(7) Turn right between plots 262 and 265. Follow the path, cross the Route forestière des Trois Saules and continue straight ahead.
(8) At the end, follow the Route Forestière des Ventes Saint-Rémy to the right for about 130 m, then take the path on the left between plots 250-251 (2nd climb). Follow this path and, when you reach the crossroads, turn right.
(9) Follow the Chemin Forestier du Faîte to the left for 200 m.
(10) When you reach a beech tree with a broken trunk, on the right opposite the path leading uphill to the left, turn right, follow the path opposite, go down it, pass along a high fence (plot 242) to reach the D97, known as the Route des Longs Vallons.
(11) Cross it and turn left onto Chemin du Val Ygot, between plots 230–236, to reach the D99, Route de la Heuze (3rd climb). Take it to the left for 300 m to reach the car park at the Val Ygot site
(12) Turn right to visit the site (30-minute self-guided tour or 1½-hour guided tour). Follow the route anti-clockwise.
(13) At the crossroads, take the first path on the right for a short round trip.
(13) On your return, turn right (south-west) to rejoin the D99 without going back via the car park. Follow the road to the right until you reach the Carrefour de la Heuze.
(14) Turn left onto the Allée Forestière des Limousins and continue straight on for 1.1 km. When the road bends left, continue straight on along a track and descend steeply. Cross the Route des Limousins and the Route des Longs Vallons (D97), then climb back up to rejoin the Route des Limousins (4th climb).
(15) At the Carrefour des Saules, turn right onto Chemin des Trois Saules between plots 276 and 277. At the end, take the path on the left and stay on the edge of the woodland.
(16) Once on the path between plots 274 and 275, turn left and enter the woods. At the junction of the Route forestière d’Affectation and the Route forestière de Nissy (plots 282, 283, 288 and 289), turn right. Continue along the Route forestière de Nissy for about 1 km.
(17) Turn left onto the path leading to the Chapelle Saint Étienne (open to visitors). Continue; you will soon reach a T-junction and turn left onto the Route du Fond Saint-Étienne.
(18) At the junction with the forest tracks, turn right between plots 297-298 and the signpost for route no. 10. Follow the track past a first junction (plots 297-298-299-300). At Route Forestière Ligne Perrier, turn left until you reach the remarkable Rudi beech tree.
(19) Turn right between plots 304 and 305. Join the Route Forestière des Fontes and follow it to the right for 200 m.
(20) Turn left (south-east) between plots 317 and 318. The track is in poor condition. Continue for approximately 550 m.
(21) Before the path narrows, turn right and follow the path down to the D154 (a place known as Chemin du Goulet).
(22) Follow the road to the left and head towards the entrance to Saint-Martinet. Then turn right onto Chemin de Roville. Cross the two fords of the branches of the River La Varenne. Follow the Route de Roville and, further on, ignore the Chemin des Maraîchers on the right.
(23) At the junction, turn left onto Rue des Forges. Further on, you’ll come out onto Rue Dillard; follow it to the left to reach the starting car park (S/E).
