Le Puits Merveilleux and Les Carcahoux from Saint-Saëns

Starting from Saint-Saëns, a lovely trail through the heart of the beech forest of Eawy to discover the Puits Merveilleux, the schoolchildren's trail, the Carcahoux camp and the village of Les Ventes Saint-Rémy.

Description of the walk

Park on Place Maintenon, in front of the town hall of Saint-Saëns.

(S/E) Go up Rue du 31 Août 44. Higher up at the fork, turn left onto Rue du Bienheureux.

(1) Make a small detour to the left to discover the Oratoire du Bienheureux, then return to the street. At the crossroads below, turn left onto Rue du Catelier. Walk up towards the Eawy forest to reach its edge.

(2) Take the small path on the right, marked by an orange sign. Follow the road below. Follow the trail closely, then turn off and continue into the forest. You will reach the Route Forestière de la Verrerie.

(3) Turn left and follow the stony path to reach La Verrerie.

(4) Turn left onto the Route Forestière des Limousins, pass in front of the Maison Forestière de Maucomble, then quickly turn right onto the Route Forestière de la Commission. Shortly afterwards, you will reach the crossroads of a dirt track.

(5) Turn left to reach the Puits Merveilleux.

(6) Continue along the path, join the Route Forestière de Bully, turn right onto it, then immediately turn left onto the Sentier Découverte. Join the Chemin des Écoliers, which also supports the Sentier Découverte.

(7) Turn right, walk along the edge of the woods, then turn left to enter the woods and arrive at the Carcahoux campsite.

(8) Leave the Sentier Découverte here, continue straight ahead to join the tarmac road and reach the centre of the village of Les Ventes-Saint-Rémy. Continue until you reach the junction of the D13 and the Jardin du Roi de Rome.

(9) Turn left, take the D12 and continue to the edge of the forest, where you will find a picnic area.

(10) Turn left onto the path at the edge of the forest. Then veer slightly to the right to enter the forest. Continue along a straight section until you reach the junction with the Route Forestière du Grimplet.

(11) Turn right onto it. Cross the tarmac road Les Limousins and continue straight ahead. Continue along this road to reach the D12.

(12) Turn left onto it to return to the village of Saint-Saëns. Pass in front of the Dalmazan equestrian centre. At the end of Rue Pierre Brossolette, turn left to return to the Place Maintenon car park (S/E).
