Description of the walk

Access: From Saint-Donat-sur-l'Herbasse, take the D584 towards Barthenay. A few small Rando Croquis signs are placed at certain intersections from the town centre.
About 3 kilometres from the town centre, there is a rest area with parking on the right-hand side of the road.

Rando Croquis signposts

(S/E) From the car park, with your back to the information signs, cross the road and head towards the path opposite (wooden signs). Climb a few stone steps and you will reach workshop no. 1: drawing a tree (wooden easel).

Facing the desk, follow the path that branches off to the right, which is shared with the botanical trail. You will soon arrive at workshop no. 2: draw a path.

Continue along the path, leaving a vague trail on your left and climbing up a stony section. Further on, cut across a path (not marked on the map) and you will reach the Combe de Sizay crossroads.

(1) Turn right towards Le Nordmann and find workshop no. 3: the direction of the line.

Continue slightly uphill and arrive at workshop no. 4: framing, just before the crossroads.

Reach the crossroads and continue straight ahead (ignore the path on the left). 150 metres further on, continue straight ahead (ignore the path on the right) and arrive at workshop no. 5: drawing a fountain.

Take the path that climbs slightly and arrive at the Fontaine du Loup marker.

(2) Turn right to immediately find workshop no. 6: drawing undergrowth.

Continue along a flat section, then begin the descent. When the slope becomes steeper, you will arrive at workshop no. 7: drawing a landscape.

Continue down the fairly steep slope and arrive at workshop no. 8: one subject, four techniques.

Continue downhill to reach the tarmac road (D584). Cross it (take care) and continue opposite on a small hollow path downhill. You will arrive at the Combe du Loup marker.

(3) Turn right towards Combe d'Oternaud and reach workshop no. 9: natural colours.

Continue along the path for about 100 metres and you will find workshop no. 10: the walker's notebook (summary) just before the crossroads.

Reach the Combe d'Oternaud marker and turn right towards the Bois de Sizay. You will soon arrive at the car park (S/E).

The area is well endowed with paths and trails that allow for detours, so we have included this hike in a larger circular route. Even if we don't draw them, the stands encourage observation.
The weather is vaguely snowy with no wind, and due to the humidity, some sections are a little muddy.

We loved the idea of combining drawing with observing nature, trees and their environment. Armed with a newly acquired sketchbook, we took part in the workshops on offer and learnt lots of tips. The walk is really enjoyable. Perfect for children or grandchildren!

A very beautiful hike to do in a pleasant forest with all these beautiful trees sheltered from the wind, as we did it on a very windy day!
