Circular walk in Camarès via the lake, La Garde and the Roman road

A walk suitable for everyone despite its 120-metre elevation gain. Along the route you will discover the Camarès water sports centre (in the summer season), its old streets leading up to the ancient castle, its monumental Virgin Mary statue, and its panoramic views of the village and the surrounding countryside.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the water sports centre car park, head up Chemin des Rainettes, the access road to the car park. Turn left onto Chemin des Zizines. Follow it up to Chemin Grand (a stone cross marks the Y-junction). Continue uphill for about 50 metres, where a path branches off to the right and climbs.

(1) Take this Chemin du Théron. First turn left then right and continue uphill to reach the Fontaine du Théron. Leave the fountain on your right and, once you reach the Chemin des Vignes, continue to the left. After about a hundred metres, follow a path uphill to the right which leads to the Porte de Rome (the castle’s old gate). Go through this gate and take the grassy path between the two walls. This path leads to the foot of the Virgin.

(2) Take the Chemin de la Serre on your right, which passes beneath the castle ruins. A little further on, the path changes its name to Chemin Rural de Combalière.

(3) At the top of the hill, a row of trees sloping down to the left is preceded by a farm track to follow, which leads to the Chemin du Carrou. If the track is closed, open the gate and close it properly behind you; the owner allows pedestrians to pass on this condition. Please note that the slope is steep and may be slippery.

(4) At the bottom of the track, take the tarmac Chemin du Carrou on the right, cross the Route d’Andabre and take the Chemin de la Garde opposite

(5) After the care home, turn left. Walk between the two cemeteries. When you reach an electrical substation, head down the Roman road which runs between two rows of tall, old houses. Leave the Pont Vieux on your right. Follow Rue de l’Église for about 40 metres and cross over to take Chemin Grand for 60 metres.

(6) Leave Chemin Grand and take Chemin des Jardins on the right. Head towards the banks of the River Dourdou. The path, which is quite wide at first, narrows into a track that leads directly to the car park (S/E).
