Promenade des Moines in Villefranche

Start from the car park of the community hall, opposite the town hall.

(S/E) Walk up the street towards the ‘no entry’ sign. At the school, turn right onto a small path that goes round the building on the right. Ignore the paths on the left until you reach a chicane.

(1) Take the tarmac road to the crossroads. Opposite Rue du Château, go down the grassy path on the right and you’ll reach Rue du Couvent. Turn left and continue along this road as far as Les Écharlis.

(2) Take either the path under the porch or the one to the right of the porch. Pass the two consecutive streets on the right, which serve a few houses; after the last farm buildings, the road turns into a track. At the Fork in the road, keep to the right and you’ll reach the end of a wooded section and the Fontaine Carrelée (closed).

(3) Continue along the compacted track, leaving a lovely path on your right that passes above the water pumping station (not shown on the IGN map). Enter the woodland, then reach a road.

(4) Turn left onto this tarmacked road, which runs alongside the entire Bois des Chêniaux on your left.

(5) Continue along the edge of this woodland, turning left. Head briefly through the woodland to reach a crossroads where four paths meet.

(6) Head up to the right and reach a track which you should take on the left. Cross Les Lindets and continue along the road until you reach the RD18.

(7) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead towards Les Dionnets. The road descends then climbs again to reach a junction with a path starting on the left.

(8) Take this path, which crosses a ford (if the water is high, take the footbridge on the left) and leads onto a road (RD18, Route de Villeneuve).
Turn right onto it and, shortly afterwards (about 50 m), take the grassy path on the left. At the junction, turn left, following the wire fence, then you’ll come out onto the street you took at the very start.

(1) Head to the right, passing the chicane, then join the path running past the school and the car park (S/E).

Between (3) and (6), the Bois des Chêniaux has several access points. All are private and often marked as off-limits. Please respect the posted instructions.
This marked route, which complies with the marking guidelines of the Puisaye-Forterre Community of Communes, is marked with the number 95 on yellow-backed signs.
The route was signposted by the association ‘À chacun son chemin en Puisaye-Forterre’ in February 2023.
