Walk in and around Manthes

Manthes is a beautiful village well worth a visit. The village is crossed by five watercourses, one of which, the Veuse, has its source here. There are ponds, a fish farm, a church and its 11th-century priory which once housed six monks, and a central square next to lovely stretches of water.
So, keep your eyes peeled and be curious, as this village has a long history, like so many others.

Description of the walk

For those without a car, there are two bus routes serving Manthes from the towns of the Rhône Valley (numbers 2 and 12) and from the surrounding towns to the east and south.

(S/E) From the car park at the church priory, head down to join the Montée de l’Église and take the Chemin des Plantèes on the left for about 80 metres. Turn right onto Rue de Montfray. After about 250 metres, ignore the road branching off to the left and take the path continuing straight ahead. Cross the Torrent de Combet, continue along the Chemin du Buissonnet and pass between the farm buildings to reach the Y-junction.

(1) Turn right onto Chemin des Piérrards and continue straight on until you reach the D139. Turn right onto it, then immediately left after the Combet stream bridge. Continue straight on. In this section, you can see the fish farm. As you leave the woods, turn right for 60 m.

(2) Turn left towards the hedge and continue to the right to reach a path. Take this path to the right, slightly off the main track, and continue straight on to reach the small bridge on the left.

(3) Turn left onto Rue de Port de Jonc, take the first path on the right and immediately cross the small bridge on the right to continue through the middle of these pools of water.

(4) Turn right at the first small passage, continue to the left to reach the main road (Rue des Sources). Follow it to the right for about 150 m, then take the Montée de l'Église on the left. After about 120 m, a narrow staircase leads up to the church car park (S/E).

Hello,
Unfortunately, I couldn't find my way from point 2 to point 4, which significantly shortened my walk. The explanations at point 2 are not clear enough. So I gave up... This isn't the first time this has happened to me with Visorando. It's becoming a regular occurrence. What a shame!

A very easy route that we did with two children, who really enjoyed it. They were fascinated by the geese guarding the fish farm. The finish is lovely, along the River Veuze – it’s absolutely beautiful – and we had a picnic in the park.

We had a bit of a struggle in the meadows near Veuze because the path was completely flooded and difficult to cross without getting our feet wet! That must only happen in winter.
I extended the walk by going via Moras en Valloire, following Delphe26’s directions; there was an interesting little exhibition at the Chosson hut.
The Manthes Park is splendid, with the source of the Veuze.

A tour of this village in the Drôme region, linked to Moras-en-Valloire.
It’s a shame there’s no water ☹️. The port of Jonc deserves a refurbishment to restore it to its former glory – and why not turn it into a hydroelectric mill!
Beautiful priory 👌
To combine this with Moras-en-Valloire, you can take the GR 422 to discover, in particular, the Cabane Chosson at point 260. Then, at the junction, take the Chemin de la Tonnellerie to reach the Porte Salmone and the Tree of Liberty at the entrance to this Dauphiné village, which is strongly characterised by its vernacular architecture.
For the return journey, you can take the Chemin du Pavé and the Chemin du Buissonnet to reach point 1;
This heritage discovery detour adds 3 km and 100 m of elevation gain.
