Walk above Le Revest-les-Eaux

This is an easy walk to discover the beautiful village of Le Revest-les-Eaux, nestled beneath the white slopes of the Bau du Midi, the eastern foothills of Mont Caume, and overlooking the blue expanse of its reservoir.

Description of the walk

Head to Le Revest-les-Eaux and park in the large car park on Place Jean Moulin.

(S/E) Leave the car park via the car exit and turn left onto Traverse de la Luzerne.

(1) At the end, turn right and you will immediately reach another junction.

(2) Turn left onto Chemin des Châteaux d'Eau. Head uphill and, after about 250 m, turn right onto Montée du Pigeonnier, which begins with a concrete ramp and continues as a very steep staircase, initially fitted with an iron handrail, before becoming a path that runs alongside the gate of a property directly overlooked by the dovecote perched on its monumental rock.

The path then joins a very rutted track; take this to the right to reach the dovecote, perched on a huge, ball-shaped sandstone rock. Warning: danger on this rock, where there are no guardrails: do not venture to the edge, and do not attempt to walk around the dovecote. Enjoy the view with caution and vigilance. Follow the track back up until you reach a track in good condition.

(3) Turn right onto this track, which heads almost horizontally north-east. Initially in good condition, this track gradually becomes rutted and impassable even for a 4x4. Continue along it until you run alongside an old quarry. You will come to a road.

(4) Follow this road northwards. After a few dozen metres, leave the road and turn left to walk alongside a football pitch on your left (GR® red and white markings). Walk round the football pitch to locate the start ofthe GR® trail heading towards Siou Blanc. Return to the road.

(4) Follow the road to the right and, after about fifty metres, turn left to follow theGR® towards the village. Join the road you left earlier and follow it to the left until you reach the junction you took on the way there.

(2) Continue straight on.

(1) Cross Rue de la Luzerne on the left-hand side and continue straight on. Walk past the town hall and turn left onto the Allée de la Libération, lined with plane trees, until you reach the church. Walk up this street and Rue de la Paix, then turn right onto Rue Jean Aicard, Rue Lazare Carnot, and finally Rue de la Tour. Following the route as best you can whilst continuing uphill, you will reach the medieval tower, which you can access here by passing through a covered passageway.

From the esplanade surrounding this tower, now used as a belfry (a bell in a campanile rings the hours at its summit), you can enjoy a panoramic view of the whole village, the lake, and to the east, the Tourravelle estate, Mont Combes, the Ragas ravine, etc.

Head back down via Rue de la Tour, Rue Carnot and Rue de la Paix, or any other route through the village’s narrow streets, which are well worth a stroll. Make your way to Boulevard de l’Égalité, then to the car park at Place Jean Moulin (S/E).

Notes

Walk completed in February 2023.

No difficulty, but it is best to wear mid-cut shoes and carry a pair of walking poles, as the walk starts with a steep climb and the paths are sometimes very rocky. Take care on a few sections that can be slippery in wet weather.

Take extra care on the Pigeonnier rock, which has no safety barriers: be careful with dogs and especially with children. I am very surprised that the municipality of Le Revest has not yet fitted this rock with a guardrail.

Worth a visit

As well as its remarkable location and natural setting, the village of Le Revest boasts a wealth of attractions:
- the feudal dovecote perched on its massive sandstone rock
- the medieval tower
- a number of murals adorning the village walls, some of which feature a QR code allowing you to visit the town hall’s website for further information
- the dam and its lake, which combine scenic beauty with technological interest
- an unobstructed view of the surrounding area, whether the foothills of Mont Caume, Mont Faron, Le Ragas, the Tourravelle estate or Le Grand Cap, above the Fiéraquet quarry

@MARTINE21 Thank you for the lovely photo of the village taken from the dovecote that you posted: it’s a great complement to the one I posted myself, where the landscape was a bit misty.

We had a lot of trouble finding the entrance to the dovecote, but after several attempts we managed it, and the view of Le Revest from there is magnificent. Thank you.

A lovely village, with a short, easy walk up the hill and back.

A lovely walk along narrow paths that takes you past the village’s monuments and through the woods. However, the village is currently undergoing building work and the picturesque alleyways are in a right state!
Also worth noting is one of the Toulon Resistance headquarters, on the way down after rejoining the road, on our left (there is a commemorative plaque in front of the house).
The walk around the stadium is of limited interest, so you can head straight back down to point 4.

Thank you very much @glaciers for your quick reply. Indeed, in that area I noticed large circular erosion features in the sandstone, forming more or less horizontal basins, but I didn’t go far enough to see an arch. I’ll go and have a look next time.

The small stone arch is located about 20 metres below the dovecote, to the right of the track as you approach.

Thanks @glaciers for your feedback.
If you took a photo of the stone arch, it would be lovely if you could post it; it might be of interest to future visitors. If not, could you tell us where it is?

A pleasant walk on this cloudy day.
The view from the dovecote is remarkable.
Hidden nearby is a small stone arch waiting to be discovered...
We avoided the loop around the stadium.
At point 4, the GR follows the Chemin des Baumettes.
A visit to the village of Le Revest is a must.
Magnificent cherry trees in bloom welcomed us on the tower esplanade.
It’s a shame, however, about the numerous dog poo littering the route.
Thanks to the author for sharing...
