Circular route starting from Le Revest-les-Eaux

A fairly challenging hike, starting from the pretty village of Revest-les-Eaux, above Toulon, which you visit at the start to explore its charming little streets and its majestic 13th-century tower.
The route has been amended today (20/03/2024) to avoid unpleasant surprises such as closed or private paths.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Place Jean Moulin.

(S/E) Head towards the tower following the signposted route, then stroll through the narrow streets before returning to the car park. Look for a sloping lane at the entrance and to the east of the car park; this is the Chemin de la Reboune.

(1) Turn right onto it and then continue along the path that follows it. You’ll reach the edge of the reservoir at the junction with a track.

(2) Follow it to the left after taking a look at the lake. Continue along the path running alongside a stone-built canal. Note: it is easier to walk down into the canal, if there is no water in it. You will reach the mouth of the Rivière Neuve.

(3) Follow the blue or orange markings, which will be a great help on the first part of the hike. Climb up the other side along an overhanging path. Head left and, further on, you’ll reach a fork at a place called Le Ragas.

(4) Turn right onto the orange-marked path to tackle the more challenging section. You’ll need to climb over rocks several times to make progress, but it’s nothing too difficult. You’ll reach a Y-shaped junction at Ravin du Cierge.

(5) Turn right here. Continue the climb, pass under the power lines and join aPR® trail.

(6) Turn left onto it, follow the yellow markings and reach another, not very obvious, crossroads.

(7) Leave thePR® and take this path on the right, then rejoin the PR®.

(8) Turn right and walk for 200 m.

(9) Turn left. Walk 1,200 metres along the PR®.

(10) Turn right towards the Tourris estate.

(11) 150 metres after the château, turn left onto a path bordered by wire fencing and walk past a ruin, then under the power lines to reach, after 1 km, a gate intended for livestock.

(12) Go through it, veer left, take care not to damage the crops, and look for another gate, 150 m to the right, which opens onto a path bordered by wire fencing. You will come to another gate.

(13) Head straight ahead, following the yellow markings towards Les Camps and La Tourravelle. After a hairpin bend, you’ll reach a crossroads with several directions.

(14) Take the path on the right and keep right again at the next junction. You’ll reach a concrete road, then continue left onto Route des Camps. You’ll arrive at the Usine des Eaux downstream of the Dardennes Dam. Here, look for a path climbing up to the right as you come out of the bend.

(15) Take this path and you will reach a clearly visible metal staircase. Continue uphill, pass under a small bridge and join the Chemin du Barrage. Follow this path and then climb the Chemin du Val Dardenne, rejoin the Route du Colombier and easily find your way back to Place Jean Moulin and the car park (S/E).

Notes

A GPS is very useful here.

Worth a visit

Between (1) and (2), admire the magnificent olive trees, some of which are several hundred years old, on your left as you pass by.
(11) You can continue straight on to visit the magnificent Château de Tourris: the Domaine de Tourris and its beautiful château: wine, olive oil, function room.

Hi, I did this route – I extended it a bit, but it’s great: you can see the cave and the ant-like carvings on the rocks. Thanks again, but be careful not to do it if it’s rained the day before. Cheers

For the second time, a pleasant walk under the canopy.
The last part of the circular loop isn’t very interesting but is unavoidable.
The circular route through the village can be avoided by residents of Greater Toulon

The signposting isn’t straightforward: it starts with a blue dash, followed by blue circles and some glossy teal ones!! The route map is well designed, and keeping the app open is a good idea to avoid making the same mistake two or three times. 02 2025

A lovely wooded area near Toulon.
Some sections are quite technical.
Suitable for all seasons.

The path is very poorly marked. You have to keep the GPS on the whole time.
What a shame

Route completed on 10 April 2024 under overcast skies.
A lovely walk with a challenging start (points 4–5) but otherwise quite enjoyable. Signposting could be improved; you have to look out for the blue and orange dots, blue and yellow lines, and changes of direction... Signposting improves from point 10 onwards.
I usually hike with just a paper map, but on this occasion the GPS came in handy more than once
Le Revest-les-Eaux is a charming Provençal village.

Hello, we followed the suggested route, which was lovely up to point 10 after the descent under the pylons, but then it became impossible to continue; the route enters private property and barriers have recently been put up... A local cyclist confirmed this to us; we couldn’t get through and had to take a very long detour, which wasn’t easy at all as the vegetation along the fence is very dense here. We followed the fence for about 1.5 km before finally rejoining the route.
Apart from this mishap, the route is lovely, through the woodland, and especially the gigantic Le Ragas cave – it’s incredible how huge it is! Videos show it flooded in 2019 – you wouldn’t want to be standing in front of the gate! As for the time, we were well over 3 hours 55 minutes... without the circular route to rejoin the path at point 10.

Hello,
I encountered the same problem as you in point number 10. I should have mentioned this in my previous comment... In fact, when you come to the closed gate, you need to turn back about twenty metres until you come to another gate on the right, this time with a small gate that allows you to rejoin the footpath.

A small but very important detail: there’s no mobile signal along the entire route, so you’ll need to download the map before setting off. Big mistake – I tried to download it as I was heading onto the trail… but as there’s no signal in Le Revest, I didn’t get the map; the download only finished when I got back to the car … ahh, blondes

A superb circular walk. No particular difficulties, but do expect to have to put your hands to the ground several times between points 4 and 5. A really enjoyable and varied walk. We completed it by following the GPS track without too much trouble. And it’s highly recommended: there are numerous paths and the signposting isn’t always reliable. Note that between points 7 and 8, you can take a short detour to discover some curious insects carved into the rock (see ‘La Verrerie, the sand and marble quarries at Les Fourmis, Les Olivières’). A big thank you to the hiker who posted this route – I thoroughly enjoyed it!
