Walk in Saint-Fargeau

A walk to perhaps round off the day with a visit to the castle and/or the museum. As you wander through the streets, you’ll see medieval houses, wash houses, the old market hall, and you’ll often cross the Ruisseau du Bourdon.

Description of the walk

This walk starts from the small car park behind Saint-Ferréol Church, Place Abbé Pandevant. There is a larger car park near the old market halls (2).

(S/E) Follow Rue de l’Église to go round the church on the right. Walk past the entrance (usually open) and go straight on; then, before the bridge over the Rigole du Bourdon, follow the path to the left for a return walk along the water’s edge to the Lavoir du Bourgneuf. Retrace your steps and continue left along the road, crossing the bridge. You will arrive at the beautiful Château de Saint-Fargeau (see practical information for visits).

(1) On leaving the château (or turning your back on the entrance), head straight on to reach the square with a fountain (Place de la République; look out for the tourist office if you’d like the keys to visit the Chapelle Sainte-Anne after the walk). Take the street on the left, which passes in front of the inn, and, at the end, follow a path leading to a large car park and the old market halls (a beautiful wooden building with picnic tables and toilets).

(2) Head back towards the town centre via the main street. At the crossroads, with the Clock Tower on your right, take a short detour to the other side of the tower to see some half-timbered houses, then retrace your steps, pass under the tower again and, before reaching the main road, take a narrow alleyway on the right which leads to Rue du Petit Pont; follow this straight ahead. You’ll arrive at a pretty square (Place Alphonse Schmidt) after crossing the Ruisseau du Bourdon.

(3) Turn left then right onto the main road (Avenue du Général Leclerc) and walk past the Community of Communes building, then cross the road and turn left towards the Musée de l’Aventure du Son. Walk past the museum and continue to the Pont des Augustins over the Ruisseau du Bourdon (with a beautiful wash house). Retrace your steps slightly and follow the road/car park on the left which passes in front of the war memorial, then continue along the path beside the stream for a short round trip.

(4) Retrace your steps without going as far as the car park and head left onto the path that branches off to the left at the corner of a building. Once you reach the tarmac, continue along the path to the right. You will come out onto the main, busy road (Avenue du Général Leclerc), with the town hall on your right.

(5) Cross over and follow the one-way street opposite (Rue du Tripot). At the junction, turn right onto Rue des Écoles and continue straight on along this street until you reach Place Alphonse Schmidt.

(3) Turn left (Rue Jacques Cœur), then left again (Rue des Lions), ignore the Passage des Lions on your right, and cross back over the Ruisseau du Bourdon. At the junction, turn right onto Rue de l’Église; further on, follow this road to reach the car park (S/E).
