From Saint-Paul to Trou d'Eau via the beaches
The west of Réunion is very popular for its white sandy beaches stretching for miles! Starting from Saint-Paul, you’ll come across plenty of sights. Some beaches are particularly beautiful when they’re not crowded. Of course, you can take your time visiting the coastal towns along the way or taking a dip in the water. There are plenty of places to stop for refreshments all along the route! But we strongly recommend bringing a hat!
Sans-Souci – Roche Plate
What hiker hasn’t dreamt of walking the Cirque de Mafate on Réunion? This hike is renowned for being challenging, with a considerable elevation gain. But the scenery is spectacular!
Please note: the elevation gain given is an overestimate; it is actually only about 1,200 metres uphill and 800 metres downhill.
La Possession – Grande Chaloupe
Eighth stage of the island tour, following the railway line as closely as possible. After the long flat stretch of the previous stages, this short stage sees a return to uphill terrain. As access to the tunnel is officially prohibited, you must go via the Chemin des Anglais, which includes sections with steep gradients. This is a very old paved path that is now a must-do hike on the island.
Saint-Gilles – Saint-Paul
Fifth stage of the island tour, running close to the railway line. This stage is flat and relatively easy. The first section is urban and passes through the tourist towns of Saint-Gilles and Boucan Canot, renowned for their white sandy beaches. The second section is more rural, running along the cliffs of Cap la Houssaye. The final section is urban once again and takes you through the town of Saint-Paul. Along the way, you’ll come across around ten remnants of the railway line.
From La Possession to Saint-Denis via the Chemin des Anglais and the Colorado
Here’s an original way to get from La Possession to Saint-Denis. This is the final section of the Grand Raid, one of the world’s toughest mountain races. Nearly half of the walk follows the Chemin des Anglais, a cobbled path steeped in history and offering stunning views. This route passes through La Grande-Chaloupe and Le Colorado. This walk requires a certain level of fitness.
Cayenne - Roche Plate
The passage near the Ravine Grand Mère caldera is breathtaking.
Scout Trail starting from Grand Place
The famous Scout Trail, where the ridge sections offer impressive views of the Mafate cirque.
Roche Plate – La Nouvelle
A stage made all the more enjoyable by the unforgettable setting of the Trois Roches.
