Pont de Roide - St-Hippolyte

This hike is the second stage of the Grande Traversée du Jura. Although a little longer and more difficult than the first, it is one of the easiest stages of this crossing. Starting from Pont-de-Roide, the hike begins with an ascent to the Tour Carrée, passing by the Fort des Roches, which offers a superb view of the region. The hike then alternates between meadows and wooded areas, touching on the theme of the Second World War, notably with the Passage de la Douleur. The descent to Saint-Hippolyte is pleasant, with stops at Chamesol and the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Mont. Of course, once you arrive, don't hesitate to take a longer break in the beautiful village of Saint-Hippolyte.

Description of the walk

Start the hike at the "Maison pour Tous" bus stop in Pont-de-Roide.

Red and white GR® markings

(S) From the bus stop, go down Rue du Général Herr and take Rue du Temple on the left. At the hairpin bend, take the path that climbs to the right at the end of the bend. Then turn left onto Rue de la Chapelle and continue to the crossroads at the Protestant cemetery.

(1) Turn right onto Rue du Maquis. Then take the path that climbs up opposite, to the left of the road. Pass a path on the left, a track on the right and another coming from the left. At the hairpin bend, turn left and join the road.

(2) Go up the road on the left to pass a viewpoint. Then make a wide right turn. At the crossroads, keep right to reach another viewpoint.

(3) Continue along the road until the next bend. Turn left onto the shortcut. Cross the road twice. At the third fork, go straight ahead to reach the entrance to Fort des Roches.

No markings

(4) Turn right to cross the fort and reach the viewpoint.

(5) Then return to the entrance to the fort.

Red and white GR® markings

(4) Go straight ahead. Continue straight ahead, then leave the track on the left. Leave the wide track for a path on the left. Cross this track again. Leave a path on the right to find the white path.

(6) Continue uphill, straight ahead. Then turn left onto a wide, slightly muddy track. Leave another abandoned track that branches off to the left and continue uphill until you pass under the power lines. You will reach a crossroads.

(7) Keep left on a flatter track and reach a pass.

No markings

Take the path on the right, which leads to the Tour Carrée.

(8) Return to the pass.

Red and white GR® markings

Continue along the track on the right. Pass a path on the left, then two more on the right. Stay on this wide track until you reach the road. At the road, turn left and follow it carefully to the monument called "Le Passage de la Douleur".

(9) Just after this, turn right onto the GR®. At the top, leave the path on the right to reach a Y-junction.

(10) Leave the path on the right and stay at the top to go around Fort du Lomont. After walking along the fort, you will reach a crossroads.

(11) Descend at an acute angle to the right. Pass another crossroads. At the road, turn right, then climb slightly to reach a crossroads.

(12) Turn left and descend. At the first track, turn left, cross a meadow and reach a crossroads in the woods.

(13) Turn right onto the GR®. Please note that the IGN maps are out of date at this point, so you must follow the trail and the markings on the ground. Then leave the more or less abandoned paths leading off to the right and left and head straight ahead to the road. Go down this road on the right to reach the entrance to Chamesol.

(14) Continue downhill, then turn left at the first street, Rue du Faubourg.

No markings

(15) At the end, turn left onto Grande Rue, then go down Rue de l'Église on the right. Continue to the church, located in front of the town hall.

(16) Turn back and return to Rue du Faubourg.

Red and white GR® markings

(15) Continue straight ahead on Grande Rue, then turn left at the first crossroads onto Rue du Journal (D147). Continue to the crossroads at the end of the road.

(17) Go into the meadows opposite. At the end of the plateau, descend to the left into the woods. Make a loop and reach the road.

(18) Go down this road. Pass a crossroads and then turn left onto the GR®. Here too, the IGN maps are out of date at this point. At a fork, go straight ahead and head for the Notre-Dame du Mont Chapel.

(19) Turn right onto Chemin de la Chapelle and, just below the viewpoint, descend left onto a winding path. At the fork, turn right, then left to reach the cemetery.

(20) Go straight ahead down Rue de la Chapelle. At the Y junction, continue straight ahead on Rue Sous la Roche, which becomes Rue de la Gare.

No markings

(21) At the first crossroads on Rue de la Gare, turn right, pass in front of a small shop, and cross a car park. Continue straight ahead to rejoin Rue de la Gare and arrive at the "La Poste" bus stop in Saint-Hippolyte (E).

Notes

This hike can be done independently of the others. To do so, park in the car park next to the post office in Saint-Hippolyte (E) and take bus 206 towards Montbéliard. Get off at the "Parvis" stop, located in front of the church in Pont-de-Roide. To reach the starting point from the church, with the church on your left, walk up Rue de Besançon - François Mitterand towards the Doubs. At the end, turn right, then immediately left to cross the river. Immediately after the bridge, turn left onto Rue du Général Herr to reach the starting point (S).

Two sections are obsolete on IGN maps, so follow the markings on the ground and the trail: between (13) and (14) and between (18) and (19).
