From Fort des Roches to Pont-de-Roide

A lovely circular walk along the cliffs overlooking the Doubs valley. Breathtaking views and distant panoramas (you can see the Ballon d'Alsace 50 km to the north).
At the fort, the League for the Protection of Birds organises an annual monitoring of migratory birds.
This walk is best enjoyed in good weather for the exceptional views and the feeling of being in another world, far from the valley below.

Description of the walk

From Pont-de-Roide, climb up to Fort des Roches via the small, very narrow and steeply ascending departmental road 124. At the end of the road, park in the car park located in a large clearing in the meadows, not far from the entrance to the fort (large information board).

(S/E) Continue on foot in the same direction, heading south, following theGR® Grande Traversée du Jura marked trail. Cross the small road that extends from the departmental road twice.

(1) At thethird junction with the small road, take it on the right.

(2) At the third bend in the road, take the path on the right that leads to the edge of the cliff. Continue to the fort along this pretty path running alongside the precipice. Return to the starting point (S/E).

(S/E) Look for the path on the left that descends towards the entrance to the fort.

(3) In the fort courtyard, enter the large underground passage. A torch may be useful, but it is not completely dark. Continue to the end of the fort in the part overlooking the cliff (small panoramic platform at the top of an embankment, on the left). Magnificent viewpoint and bird migration observation point. Return by the same route to the car (S/E).

Notes

From August to November, the League for the Protection of Birds' Migratory Birds hotline is open. More than a million birds were observed in 2017. This is an opportunity to learn about birds and the role of the association. Don't hesitate to go and meet the volunteers who are there.

Please note: a torch may be useful in the fort's large underground passageway.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Fort des Roches
Along the cliff, look for this magnificent and rare little bird with butterfly wings that nests in the rocks, the wallcreeper.
The peregrine falcon often hunts in the area.

With fantastic weather, we enjoyed a lovely walk with beautiful views of the Doubs valley and the Vosges mountains (the snow-covered Ballon). We extended this walk (+2km) from point 1 by following the GR5 markings to the Tour Carrée, returning via the forest road and the path along the cliffs.

Keep your dogs on a lead (nature reserve, and you may encounter Patou dogs guarding goats).

A beautiful, short walk in the hills above Pont de Roide, in the Doubs region, with a stunning, windswept rocky viewpoint offering a 120° panoramic view of the wild countryside. A visit to the fort is also a great addition to this nature getaway.
It is entirely possible to enhance the nature walk with additional information about the initial locations, either by extending the distances here and there as you wish (parking your car at PdR or switching terrain, for example) and depending on your preparation, or by observing animals and birds with a pair of binoculars or by rereading the history of the buried fort.
It is essential to walk safely along the cliffs, especially if there are children present.
There are a few possible extensions: the Gallo-Roman amphitheatre and the Mandeure viewpoint.
I recommend this very pleasant walk and would like to thank the author.
