Pointe d'Arcalod via the Chalets d'Orgeval

A beautiful, aerial and technical hike to climb to the highest point of the Bauges Massif (2,217 m).
Magnificent 360° panorama of the entire Bauges Massif and Mont Blanc.
Note on difficulty: following feedback from hikers, this hike has been classified as Very Difficult because the ascent and descent of the peak are quite technical.

Description of the walk

From the village of École, take the D60, then at a bend, take the forest road towards Vallon de Bellevaux. Continue along this road until it ends at the Nant Fourchu stream car park.

(S/E) Continue along the road for a short distance, then take theGR® on the left, which climbs steadily through the forest (Chemin du Gros Fayard). Pass an alpine meadow with a small chalet, then come out onto a winding track suitable for vehicles.

(1) Continue left on this track, which climbs gradually through the mountain pastures towards the Chalets d'Orgeval, with the Pointe d'Arcalod rising up on the left. Reach the Chalets d'Orgeval.

(2) Continue right, heading north on the path until you reach the Col d'Orgeval.

(3) Take the path on the left, which climbs gently. Under Arcalod, you will reach a crossroads.

(4) Turn right and begin the final ascent, which is quite technical. It starts with a few small switchbacks in the grass, then on rock, and gradually becomes more difficult as you climb using your hands. Follow the markings (yellow dots on the rock) and watch out for falling rocks. You will then reach the summit via an exposed section. Now enjoy the magnificent 360° view of the entire Bauges massif, with Mont Blanc in the background.

(5) Descend carefully via the same route, using your hands to climb down the tricky sections. Take care not to slip and knock stones loose. You will then reach the crossroads at the foot of Arcalod, which you passed earlier.

(4) Go around the rocky outcrop by turning right onto a path that descends through the grass to reach the Chalets d'Orgeval.

(2) Retrace your steps to return to the Nant Fourchu car park (S/E).

Hike completed on 17 November, calm weather, excellent conditions, particularly very dry terrain on the final climb to Arcalod (last 300 metres of elevation gain), essential for ensuring sure footing on the scrambling sections. This section is marked with yellow dots and arrows that are not always easy to see if you don't look up from your feet often enough, and well-placed cairns!
The descent route is much easier to follow. Mountain footwear is highly recommended.
A magnificent hike.

A very beautiful hike, its rating is well deserved.
It starts off tough with a steep climb after leaving the tarmac road. The path through the forest is quite steep, but once you reach point 1 and continue to the Col d'Orgeval, the climb is fairly gentle through the mountain pastures, where you may encounter marmots. There is a water source at the Orgeval chalets for refilling your water bottles if necessary.
At the Col d'Orgeval towards Arcalod, a sign indicates that there are no markings on the rest of the path. In fact, there is one (a yellow dot painted on the rocks) as well as cairns to help you find your way during the ascent.
Be aware that the last part to the summit is more difficult. It includes some climbing passages that are not particularly difficult but can be daunting; caution and concentration are required.
Finally, after the last 400m of elevation gain, the reward is there: the 360° view of the Bauges massif from the summit is magnificent (in completely clear weather, it is possible to see Mont Blanc)!
We went on a weekday when the weather was good (essential for this hike; avoid in bad weather) and we didn't meet anyone else on the Arcalod that day.

A very beautiful hike alternating between walking and a significant amount of "climbing" in the last section. The handholds and footholds are very good, but be careful on the technical sections where falling is not an option. Stay focused during the ascent and descent. Well done for your description of this hike. I did it in 6½ hours, including breaks. Olivia

A very beautiful hike, with the first part to the Orgeval chalets easily accessible via a wide, albeit steep, path.
The final ascent of Arcalod is challenging in places, requiring the use of your hands and making it more difficult to follow the path marked by small yellow dots that blend into the landscape.
It's well worth the effort, with a beautiful 360° view of Les Bauges from the summit.

A beautiful hike, best avoided in wet weather as some sections on rocky outcrops become very slippery.

OK, and thank you for your wise advice. I brought this difficulty up in TD. This also confirms the author's comments on this final part.
Have a good day.

I completely agree with Gazet. Arcalod is at least a TD, and the final climb is impressive due to its steepness and fun for good rock slabs.
Note that it may be wise to park at Pont de l'Etang because, from point 4 of the description, you can ascend to the small pass between Mont de la Coche and Tré le Mollard, climb the two peaks and conquer three of the 14 2000-metre peaks of Les Bauges in one go. The descent to the starting point follows the fences via the Passage de Plan Le Mollard, Plan de la Limace, Allant and Le Chargieu, where you turn left. Then a short descent on the right bank of the Ruisseau de l'Enfer, off the trail and due east, takes you back to the track that descends to Rière Bellevaux and your car.

Hello,
Just a quick note about the difficulty level: in the same area, Chaurionde and Arcalod are both rated "Difficult" on Visorando (same route up to the Col d'Orgeval and roughly the same distance). One hike is on a trail with no technical difficulties (Chaurionde), while the other requires you to use your hands on the final slope and to be vigilant about the route and the risk of falling rocks (a helmet may be recommended, especially when there are a lot of people)...
So, two ratings that are not very consistent...
