Description of the walk

Start from the Nant Fourchu stream car park at the end of the road (École en Bauges).

(S/E) 50 m after the car park, take the path branching off to the right. A footbridge allows you to cross the Chéran. Follow the shaded path; even on very hot days, it remains relatively cool! It leads into the Combaz Fort valley.

(1) Continue along the balcony path which runs horizontally. When it enters the forest, you reach a junction.

(2) Turn sharply right to reach the Pointe de Fougère at an altitude of 1,849m.
The climb is steep but well worth the effort (magnificent views). Take care when you reach the vicinity of the summit, as the eastern slope is steep.

(3) From Pointe de la Fougère, descend via the ascent route to the fork

(2) Leave the route you took on the way up to the left and continue down the slope. You will then reach another junction on the Col de la Fougère path.

(4) Turn left. At the first hairpin bend, the path leads past an ONF hut (not shown on the map). The descent continues without difficulty via numerous hairpin bends.

(5) The path joins a wide track which you should follow to the left. This in turn leads onto the tarmac road, which you take to the left; it quickly leads back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Combaz Fort is now an abandoned mountain pasture overgrown with vegetation when you cross it in summer.

A few dozen metres from the path lie the ruins of the Combe Fort huts (only stones remain following their destruction by the German army in 1944).

You may come across both spellings, Combaz and Combe Fort, but they are both pronounced the same way: “combe”.

Alternative route: upon reaching the point (2), you can avoid the climb to Pointe de la Fougère (a 300m ascent from this point) and descend directly to the left.

This route passes through multiple protected areas, which may be subject to special regulations:

Hello.
There are plenty of people setting off from this car park (about 50 cars when we arrived!), but in the end there weren’t many hikers on this route.
A route that climbs steadily, without respite, and entirely in the shade (perfect, perfect, perfect for today).
The scent of flowers everywhere: a real treat.
A superb 360° view at the summit (and lots and lots of flies!!!!)
Thanks for this post!

The walk is mainly through the forest, so it’s lovely on a hot day, even though the climb is steep.
However, there aren’t many views during the climb, but the panorama at the summit is magnificent.
No difficulties, but a narrow path on the way back and a very quiet area indeed.
Highly recommended for the absolute peace and quiet.

It’s easy enough to find the start of the trail. It’s a very steep climb, three-quarters of which is through the forest, but it’s well worth it as the view from the top is truly magnificent.
For the descent, we didn’t follow the marked route – i.e. going back down the same path – as it was far too steep. We took the path leading down the other side (opposite when you reach the summit; the descent is less steep and sunnier, though there’s a bit of a drop on either side) to the Col de la Fougère signpost. There, take the path leading down to the left.
Just before you reach the end, you’ll come out onto a road; head down it by turning left, and at one point you’ll see a magnificent waterfall and a beautiful river below.
To sum up, even though the climb is a bit tough, it’s a hike I’d happily do again – and I’d love to have a quick dip in the waterfall if the weather permits.

At the junction for Pointe de la Fougère, the route on the map is a bit unclear. In short, if you want to go to the Pointe, head left. If you want to head back down, head right. As far as we were concerned, going up and then straight back down left us feeling a bit unsatisfied. So, at the fork for the Col de la Fougère, we took the path. At the pass, at the foot of the "Grand Roc", we took the path on the left to join the GRP trail of the Massif des Bauges. Then, heading left, we returned to our starting point. In total: 15 km and 800 m of elevation gain. Magnificent views at the Col de la Fougère and a lovely descent through beautiful countryside.
