Car park at Col du Platzerwaesel. (Ignore the first car park a little further down, on the right.)
(S/E) Cross the D27 and take the path opposite, marked with a Blue Disc. The first part of the path is not shaded and is the steepest section of the route. The path then continues through the forest to the summit of Lauchenkopf.
(1) Lovely viewpoint. From the summit, you can see the summit of the Markstein. Unsurprisingly, the path continues downhill. Follow the Blue Disc markings and then the Red Disc markings along a shaded path. Stay on the upper part of the path to reach the Col d’Oberlauchen viewpoint.
(2) Viewpoint over the Sondernach valley. Continue down the path to reach the memorial stone.
(3) Site of the former Franco-American cemetery at Oberlauchen. Turn right onto the Chemin des Américains, marked with a Blue Saltire. A wide, shaded path, gently uphill, to the entrance of the Guebwiller National Forest.
(4) Continue straight on, staying on the path until you reach the D27.
(5) Cross it to reach the signposted path opposite, heading towards the Salzbach farmhouse inn. From there, the path is no longer signposted. Walk alongside the forest for a few hundred metres. You will come to a T-junction.
(6) Take the path on the right, which is once again marked with a red-white-red Red Rectangle.
After a few hundred metres, follow the fence of the meadow below until you reach the end.
(7) Leave the path and take the small downhill track on the left to join the path below. Follow it to the right for about 1.2 km, following the red-white-red Red Rectangle markings. You will arrive at the Uff Rain Inn.
(8) Leave the farmhouse inn via the road towards Windenbach Schnepfenried, following the red-white-red Red Rectangle markings, and join the D27.
(9) Follow it on the left, along a small grassy path that allows you to avoid walking on the road.
Walk back up to the car park (S/E).
