Ascent of Mount Sidi Brahim (Haut-Rhin)

At the bottom of the Munster Valley, at the foot of the Petit Ballon road, this is a hike for those who enjoy walking through the magnificent forests of the Vosges to discover history at the battle sites of the 6th Company of the 7th Battalion of Alpine Hunters, who fought magnificently here in June 1915.

Description of the walk

On leaving Sondernach coming from Munster, head towards the Petit Ballon. After crossing the Fecht, park on the hard shoulder at the hairpin bend.

(S/E) From this spot, take the dirt track heading due south, following the bend in the road, until you reach the sign on the left indicating “Mont Sidi Brahim”. Turn left onto the narrow path that climbs through the woods. The route is marked by “Mont Sidi-Brahim” arrows or Yellow Discs at the edge of the path.

(1) Reach the D10 and turn right. Follow the road to the first hairpin bend on the left.

(2) Leave the road by taking a wide track and, after about 100 m, take the path uphill to the left. Join a wide track.

(3) Turn right and follow the track.

(4) At the junction, ignore the track going straight ahead and turn left.

(5) 100 m further on, take the path on the right leading uphill.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left 180°. Cross a track and continue along the steep path, which winds its way up to the memorial. The terrain is still scarred by the fighting of that era: shell holes, trenches and shrapnel.
A break is in order, as is a moment of reflection at the site of the fighting.

(7) For the descent, there are two options: either retrace your steps in the opposite direction, following the markings, or take the gentler route down via Landersen. This is the route shown on the map.
Follow the marked path, continuing straight on at every junction, whether the paths come from the right or the left.
This will take you to Landersen, next to a memorial stone on your right.

(8) Follow the road round the bend, then immediately afterwards, head downhill along a path on the right. Ignore the wide track heading off to the left, towards the south-west. Cross the road further down. Turn left and rejoin the fork from the outward journey.

(2) After the hairpin bend on the right, turn left downhill and, following the route in reverse from the outward journey, return to the starting point (S/E).

A lovely walk in a remote and wild part of the Munster Valley. Apparently very quiet (which is just as well). There are a few challenging sections (best tackled with walking poles!). The end point isn’t a summit, but if you climb a little further up past the memorial, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.
Thanks for the guide!

The GPX track for this route is very reliable, and although I wasn’t the group’s guide, I was able to steer us back on track once or twice thanks to this track.
Many thanks to Visorando and to the creator of this route.

What a superb climb. Yes, you could say it’s quite a workout in places!! But it’s so beautiful! Shortly after setting off, when the path levels out, take the unmarked path veering 170° to the left. Follow it straight on until you reach the road, even if it looks abandoned due to the overgrown vegetation. Once you reach the commemorative plaque, you absolutely must climb to the summit. It’s a scarred landscape where you need to watch out for bomb craters as well as tunnels hidden by blueberry bushes. There, you can really feel the suffering of these men who fought in a way that’s unimaginable today. For my part, I had a picnic there—a simple way of paying tribute to them.
For Fredy, the path marked by the Yellow Triangle is no longer visible due to ongoing logging. But, well, continuing along the Yellow Circle to the right is just as pleasant.

Good evening,
It’s quite a steep climb, but the walk through the woodland is pleasant.
Carry on climbing for a few minutes past the 7th BCA memorial plaque to see all the shell holes at the battle sites.

The descent is really tricky; the direction to Landersen isn’t signposted, so you need to follow the signs for Lechterwand until you reach the first crossroads, turn left there and try to find the path a few dozen metres further on to the right. You’ll then see a row of trees marked with a Yellow Triangle, which will lead you to Landersen; after that, it’s easy to get back to the starting point.
In my opinion, the OT3619 map is essential.
See you soon
