Golden stones and country lanes from Sainte-Paule

Through the rolling countryside, the walk follows the red-and-yellow or yellow signposts and takes us through Oingt, a pretty medieval village with golden-hued stone buildings, a Romanesque church and numerous craft shops. The walk mainly follows paths, tracks and quiet country lanes, apart from the D116, which you’ll need to walk alongside and then cross after the descent from the Col du Chêne. The walk ends with a steep climb… so save a bit of energy for the end.

Description of the walk

The start and finish of the circular route are at the car park by the Sainte-Paule cemetery.

(S/E) Take the Grande Rue, walk past the town hall, reach a three-way junction and turn right. Continue for about 100 m.

(1) At the cross, turn left, pass through the hamlet of Le Fravrot and continue uphill to the Croix du Morry, a lovely viewpoint.

(2) Leave the road and turn left onto the path for about a hundred metres. At the junction of the GRP® and GR® trails, head down to the right towards Les Sapins. Follow the road to the left towards Glaizé.

(3) At the entrance to the hamlet, turn left onto the path leading to the hamlet of Le Châtoux. Follow the Route des Vieux Chênes to the left for 50 metres.

(4) Take the road on the right, which becomes the Chemin du Col du Chêne, and follow it to reach the pass.

(5) Cross the D116 with care and head down the first path on the right for about 50 m (signpost). Turn right again, following the signs for Pré Carra. About 420 m further on, rejoin the D116 and walk carefully along its left-hand side for about 180 m.

(6) Cross the road and take the path which rejoins this same departmental road.

(7) Turn right and head for the six-way junction at Saule d’Oingt.

(8) Turn left then right, and continue straight ahead along a path that becomes a road heading towards Oingt.

(9) Pass through La Guillardière and Place de Presberg (you can visit the medieval village of Oingt, built of golden stone).

(10) At the end of the road, turn right onto the D96 Route du Bois-d’Oingt towards Prony.

(11) After the bus stop, take the first path on the right which joins the D96. Follow it to the right for about 70 metres.

(12) Keep to the right (signposted) onto the path which passes through La Garenne, then becomes a road. Continue to the right and pass through Polluis.

(13) Follow the signs for Vervuis to the left.

(14) Cross the stream and leave Vervuis on your right.

(15) At the junction, follow the path which climbs steeply to the right to return to the starting car park (S/E).
