Description of the walk

Departure from the car park of the Cave Coopérative d'Ansignan.

(S/E) From the car park, return to the D619 and turn left, following the red and yellow markings ofthe GRP®® du Fenouillèdes. Pass the Tree of Liberty and then take the path that descends to the right where you will see the aqueduct sign.

(1) Cross the Agly via this aqueduct. On the other side, turn right onto the GRP®®. You will come to an intersection.

(2) Leave theGRP®® and turn left onto the DFCI F53 track. At the next crossroads (elevation 241), continue straight ahead (north-east). Stay on the track and ignore the side paths. Climb up and follow a series of hairpin bends. Note the view of Pic Vergès on your right. After passing an unnamed pass, begin the descent, which will allow you to see the village of Saint-Arnac.

(3) Follow the yellow PR® markings for about 100 metres, then leave the track and take the path on the left which descends through the woods and leads to the Saint-Arnac picnic area.

(4) Climb up to the village via the path on the left. Just after the wash house, turn right and continue along the road until you reach the village exit sign at the cemetery.

(5) Turn right onto the street, which continues as a path. At a small plateau and crossroads, turn left to reach the D77 road.

(6) Follow the tarmac road to the right (look for the red and yellowGRP®® markings, which you will follow continuously until the intersection at the foot of Pic Vergès). After about 150 m, leave the road on the right and follow a wide path.

(7) At the three-way junction, take the middle path. Ignore a path branching off to the right further on and continue to the next junction.

(8) Go straight ahead and stay on the main path until you reach the fork just after a ruin on your left (Pic Vergès sign).

(9) Keep to the right. Be very careful on this ascent and descent, despite the excellent facilities. The slopes are very steep, but there is a handrail to hold on to. Continue to the summit.

(10) Once at the summit, enjoy the splendid 360° view before returning to the previous intersection.

(9) Take theGRP®® on the right. Pass the Rentadou access point on your right and you will come to a star-shaped crossroads.

(11) Take the second path on the left, which curves to the right further on, approaches the Agly river and ends at a small tarmac road.

(12) Keep to the right, then immediately to the left, and continue straight ahead.

(2) Continue straight ahead and retrace your steps to complete the hike and return to the Cave Coopérative (S/E).

This hike should only be undertaken in good weather, as the ascent of Pic Vergès can be dangerous in wet and windy conditions. Please note that between points 11 and 12 there is a very technical descent, but this is extremely dangerous. Avoid it and continue straight ahead to go round it. We took it and had a right scare!!! For signposting, follow the red markings and you’ll be fine.
This hike is best undertaken in a group, provided the group is already at a good level.

Beautiful views from the summit. Overall, the route is fairly easy: wide tracks, some paved sections, and a very gradual climb. The only obstacle is the last 200 metres of the climb, which is quite steep and can be slippery. However, it is very well marked in yellow all the way to the summit and wooden steps have been installed to make the climb easier. I descended via a shortcut shown on the OSM map (south-east direction): you will need the app or a GPS, as the ridge path is not very well marked and the descent, marked with tape, is quite steep; this allows you to enjoy the view all the way down to the GRP.

An interesting and varied route with magnificent views from the summit.
BUT:
1/To reach the peak at the end, the trail is not well marked, as PHILEMA already mentioned in a previous review. You need to follow the yellow markings and go around the peak to the west to reach the summit, which is very exposed to the wind. Avoid days when the tramontane wind is strong. The approach to the summit is technical and requires caution, and the path at the start of the climb is also very damaged.
2/BE CAREFUL at approximately km 11.5 (GPS long 2.52852 lat 42.760) opposite a metal cross dated 1807, the trail dives to the left, which should be avoided as it is very dangerous- do not take a group there. This point has already been reported by OLIVIER H59. Just continue straight ahead and you will find the trail a little further on.

The end of the circuit is assisted by a handrail, so beware of vertigo.

A very beautiful hike to do in autumn.
But there is one downside in terms of safety!!! Access to the summit is very dangerous... slippery rocks above the void. Despite the safety rope, I don't take my group there

A beautiful hike, mostly on forest fire prevention trails, but the highlight is still Pic Vergès. Although the climb is quite technical towards the end (walking sticks required), the view from the summit is magnificent (avoid in strong Tramontane winds). The trail does not go all the way to the summit. If you choose to go there (yellow markings), be sure to mark your route carefully. I admit I had trouble finding the start of the trail on the way down! Another point already mentioned in previous comments: between 11 and 12, the trail that branches off to the left is in very poor condition and dangerous. I think you should continue straight ahead to follow the trail on the IGN map.

A very beautiful hike and, as mentioned in almost all the comments, the views are magnificent. One small downside regarding the route is reaching the summit between points 9 and 10. After passing the steps, the GPS track and the markings do not correspond to reach the summit, so I followed my instincts and took the path marked with a yellow X. I only saw two people that day, a lady at the start near the aqueduct and a gentleman about twenty metres from the summit who was on his way back down! A beautiful hike that I highly recommend!

This hike is very pleasant and not particularly difficult, except for the approach to Pic Vergès, which requires a little caution. The heat is very noticeable, even at this time of year.
The 360° panorama from the summit is splendid.
We only encountered one couple of hikers at the top of the peak.
One small downside on the return trail between points 11 and 12 is that we leave a comfortable path to take a steep, sandy and very slippery trail on the left, which is borderline dangerous at the end of the hike.
It would seem wiser to follow the comfortable path straight ahead, which leads to easily accessible vineyards, to reach the end of the route.

Beautiful hike. The view from the top of the peak is splendid, with a 360-degree panorama.
Hike in a quiet area, far from the crowds.

A very beautiful hike, the climb to the peak of Vergès is a bit challenging in the last part, but there are cables to help with the tricky section.
Beautiful panorama at the summit. 360° view.
We recommend it

A very beautiful hike with mimosas still in bloom.
The information sheet indicates an elevation gain of 512 metres, but I measured 650 metres.
It's a shame the sun wasn't shining.

It really is a beautiful route. Completed on 02/02/2021 on a very sunny day (21 degrees in February!)
Just a quick note about the start of the route: at point no. 1, the section on the DFCI No. 053 track: don't follow it for too long, turn left at the first other DFCI you come to. On the Pic de Verges section, I came across a group of three ladies, who were very friendly, but who didn't have a GPS and made the mistake of following the DFCI track No. 053 all the way, which took them straight to point No. 10.
Otherwise, the scenery is beautiful, the paths are easy to walk on and there are no difficult climbs (apart from the final stretch of Pic de Verges), with the added bonus of the scent of mimosa flowers in bloom.

A beautiful route starting with the Roman aqueduct, followed by stunning views from the Pic de Verges and the heath with its wonderful scents... Definitely not to be attempted in hot weather!
