Description of the walk

Start from the station at L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre.

(S/E) Follow the GRT68 towards the bottom of the village, cross over the EDF penstock, turn right running parallel to the RN towards the hikers’ car park. ‘IGN map route incorrect at this point’.
Pass under this busy road. The path, made of boulders for about 100 m, was created to avoid crossing the RN. Join the old path.

(1) Continue to the right on the GRT68, which climbs straight into the woods. Reach the small stone bridge over the Ruisseau du Siscar.

(2) Turn left and follow the GRT towards the Étang du Siscar. You will reach a fork at an elevation of 1962 metres.

(3) Turn right, leaving the GRT, and follow the signposted path towards the Étang du Siscar. Reach the lake and continue along the bank.

(4) Turn your back on the lake and head straight up to join the path leading to the Porteilla du Sisca at an altitude of 2440 metres. Turn left and head towards the Porteilla.

(5) Follow the path branching off to the right.
Two options:
- follow the ridge to the summit.
- follow the path on the north-facing slope and leave it when you reach the pre-summit plateau (choice of route). There are some faint tracks, but the low vegetation makes it easy to find your way straight to the Pic de Nérassol.

(6) 360° view. Return to La Porteilla du Sisca via the same route.

(5) Descend to the right down the north-eastern slope and head towards the Étang de Pédourrés. Cross the Ruisseau de Val d'Arques and you will immediately reach a fork at the 2165m mark.

(7) Join the GRT68 on the right, heading south-east. Pass the Jasse de Brougnic, then the small lake and its dam that follow, and continue along the path without interruption until you reach the bridge over the Ruisseau du Siscar.

(2) Turn left, heading in the opposite direction to the climb towards L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre.

(1) Turn left, go under the A68 to return to the station (S/E).

A lovely walk on a weekday, so it wasn’t too busy (I only came across three other walkers).

A lovely circular walk, best done outside the summer months (when it gets too busy).
The route around the Nerassol is fairly straightforward. Only the climb to the peak is unmarked. To reach the summit, there is no need to go via the secondary summit topped by a small cairn; it is better to leave this cairn on your right as you climb.
The route is straightforward throughout and offers a stunning 360-degree view from the summit.

A lovely, gentle climb up to the foot of the Col du Sisca, then it gets a bit steeper. The final stretch before the Pic de Nérassol is steeper still. The descent is also fairly steady and a bit technical due to the rocks, if you want to run.
Took 4½ hours including a picnic break, at a fairly brisk pace, with tired legs on the descent!
The view from the summit is superb and the scenery is beautiful all the way up, opening up as you climb.
I had a bit of trouble following the GR trail downstream from the Pédourrès pond, but I’m not sure if that was down to a lack of attention. My son, walking ahead of me, managed it without any trouble.
A lovely hike to do in good weather. The wind at the summit can be chilly, as is the case at this altitude (just over 2,600m), and is quite strong on the summit ridge. Most of the route is sheltered.
Highly recommended!
