Puig de Coma d'Or from the Col de Puymorens

This hike, which is not particularly difficult apart from its distance and significant elevation gain, leads to Puig de la Coma d'Or for a spectacular finale. You can see the whole of Lanoux as well as Carlit, the next destination. You feel very small in the midst of this immensity, and respect is called for... I think.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the edge of the RN20 at the Col de Puymorens, see Practical Information.

(S/E) From the car park, carefully cross the national road to join the track, slightly to the left, which follows the GR®107 and climbs northwards. Cross the Rec d'en Garcia, pass a dirt car park which could serve as a starting point, and reach a crossroads.

(1) Leave the GR® and follow the track that branches off to the right, running alongside the Rec d'en Garcia. After about 1 km, you will reach a crossroads.

(2) Keep left to rejoin the stream after a few hundred metres.

(3) Cross it and, after a left-hand bend, take a path on the right that cuts across several bends in the track before rejoining itonce, thentwice, higher up (elevation 2213).

(4) Follow the track, keeping to the left and leaving the return path opposite, for about 200 metres. Then turn left to cross the Rec d'en Garcia and find a path that you must follow to the left to reach the small pond of Bassa de Mercader.

(5) Turn back and climb up to the left along Rec d'en Garcia for about 250 m. Then turn right to find a well-marked path.

(6) Take it to the left to climb more steeply and reach Portella de la Coma d'en Garcia (elevation 2534) and its enormous cairn.

(7) Continue right, eastwards on the path to reach a fork.

(8) Leave the path to Estany de Coma d'Or on your right (the return route) and keep left to quickly reach Portella de Cortal Rossó (altitude 2501).

(9) Climb straight up to reach the north-western shoulder of Cap de Llosada.

(10) Continue along the path, which keeps climbing, to reach Puig de Coma d'Or (2,826 m), offering superb views of Lanoux and, if you're lucky, the bearded vulture.

(11) Descend south to the Col de Lanoux (Portella de Lanós, altitude 2468), where there are numerous viewpoints.

(12) Turn right onto a contour path that crosses the Riu de Cortal Rosso and then joins the Estany de Coma d'Or spillway.

(13) Cross the stream and continue north to go around the Coma d'Or lake on the left, west bank then north bank. Take the route to the left (north-northwest) and return to the junction with the Portella de Rossó path.

(8) Take the same route back in the opposite direction to pass Portella de la Coma d'en Garcia and continue to the path coming from Bassa de Mercader.

(6) Continue straight ahead on the path that joins the track you took at the start.

(4) Follow the track used for the ascent in the opposite direction and return to the car park (S/E).

It is possible to shorten the route by about 2 km by driving your car along the trail from the starting point (outside the summer period).

Worth a visit

There is an elaborate cross between the Coma d'Or lake and the port, about which I have been unable to find any information. You need a keen eye to spot it.
