Pic de Montaut via the Coq ridge and the Cabane de Collantigue

A lovely hike done clockwise for a gradual and gentler climb. With two options available, this hike can be adapted to suit different levels. The aim is to meet up at the Collantigue hut to share a meal and a rest.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards the post office. Continue east and cross the bridge over the Neste d'Aure.
Take the Ilhet road to the entrance of the village. Head towards the church and continue along Rue du Montaut.

(1) Turn left onto Route des Tourtères. At the first hairpin bend, continue left along Chemin de Traoussère, heading straight north alongside the power line. Leave the path on the right (elevation 680).

(2) Join Route du Tous, follow to the right for 30 metres and turn left. Pass under the power line. Continue generally north. The path turns north-east.

(3) At Portaillet, the path climbs quite steeply for 250 m, then the ascent becomes less steep. Join a track and follow it to the left until you reach Crête de Coq at the hairpin bend.

(4) Follow the ridge line, first along the road and then along a path on the left (elevation 861), under the trees, heading east then south-east. This shaded path will take you up to an altitude of 1350 m. Following the ridge, you will cross the road twice until you reach elevation 1019.

(5) There, the path continues its climb south-east. You will then cross two paths, the first at an elevation of 1,146 metres and the second at an elevation of 1,240 metres. They are 300 metres apart.

(6) At this last crossroads, continue straight ahead, still heading south-east along the ridge until you reach the Collantigue hut.

(7) From the hut (elevation 1,461 metres), the most courageous hikers will have a 261-metre climb to reach the summit of Pic Montaut, which can be done in less than an hour's walk there and back.

(8) From the summit, they will rejoin the rest of the group at the pastoral hut to share a meal and take a well-deserved rest.

(7) Part of the return journey can be made along the track, rejoining the crossroads of the circular route.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left heading south until you reach the road. Then turn right and continue downhill towards the north-west.

(9) From the place called Stèle, head north-west for 300 m and follow the first hairpin bend on the left. This leads to Tourtères.

(10) Cross the road and continue along the path to the village of Ilhet after passing under the power line.

(1) From Ilhet, return to Sarrancolin and its village square by retracing your steps to the car park in Sarrancolin's central square (S/E).

Notes

Worth a visit

(S/E) After the hike, the village of Sarrancolin has plenty of bars and cafés where you can quench your thirst. Alternatively, the bar in the village of Héches, 5 km away, is very welcoming.

The route description is average, and the signposting has been torn down… a bit of a faff and a waste of time

Route completed on 26/04/2025,
A very demanding route that requires good physical fitness, with some fairly steep climbs, and the summit is well earned. There is the option of going to the other summit opposite by doing a circular route.
At the summit, there is a beautiful 360° view with the Pennes Hautes on the north side, which the people of Comminges call Napoleon's nose.

A beautiful hike, shaded for three-quarters of the way.
Beautiful views from the hut and the top of the pass.
A 1,000-metre climb from the village. A good way to warm up.
I really enjoyed it.

Good evening, Silmar65. Thank you for your kind comments. When planning this hike, there was some forestry work going on, which slowed us down a bit, so we took advantage of the good weather to eat at a leisurely pace and take a nice nap. Add 7 to 10 minutes of rest every hour, and that's how we got the total. The mileage is calculated automatically on the app, but as with the elevation gain, there are differences from one phone to another. On Sunday 28 January, we did this route again, starting from point 4 and continuing after Montaut to Glouppe Hup in 5 hours with participants who had the stamina and breath to do so.

A very pleasant hike from the centre of Sarrancolin. It is possible to shorten the route by driving to point 4.
The landscapes are varied and pleasant. There is little respite and it is a fairly long hike that deserves its classification as difficult (physically). However, there are no technical difficulties.
The description and route are reliable, even though Visorando ultimately gives me a distance of 16 kilometres. Completed in 5 hours and 35 minutes (excluding breaks).
It should be noted that the yellow markings and various signs have all been methodically erased and destroyed.
