Fréchet-Aure - Sarrancolin

Fourth stage of the Ténarèze: this section of the route takes you back to the GR®105 from Fréchet-Aure.

The route continues through Camous, a picturesque village with a rich mining heritage. You will then take a path towards Ilhet, following the old railway line, an industrial relic that adds a touch of nostalgia to the hike.

The walk continues to Sarrancolin, the end point of this stage.

Description of the walk

(S) From the village square in Fréchet, follow the GR®105 downhill for 200 metres, passing the left-hand bend.

(1) On your right, you will find the GR®105, which will take you gently downhill to Camous. Followthe old railway line along the entire route, climbing small steep slopes each time to avoid the tunnels.

(2) Cross a bridge over the old railway line. When you arrive in Camous, cross the level crossing towards the centre of the village.

(3) Continue on the GR®105 to the left, rejoining the old railway line. Further on, you will need to go around another tunnel by taking a final steep slope.

(4) The path then descends to the level of the old railway line to Ilhet.

(5) Climb gently uphill to cross the old railway line via a small bridge that leads to the village. The main street finally takes you to Sarrancolin, the end of this fourth stage of the Ténarèze (E) .

Worth a visit

  • Camous is known for its old red sandstone quarries, which were once used to make millstones and whetstones. The village still has a fountain carved out of a block of red sandstone and a vertical millstone, evidence of this craft activity.
  • Ilhet, headquarters of the rafters' guild; they occupy an important place in local history, particularly thanks to their role in the river transport of wood and marble on the Neste d'Aure to prestigious construction sites (Opéra Garnier, Versailles, etc.).
