Pic de Fond Queyras

From Les Fonts de Cervières, dozens of hikes set off. This one, similar to the Petit Rochebrune route, allows you to traverse part of the ridge linking the Col des Péas to the summit of the Petit Rochebrune.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park next to the Refuge des Fonts de Cervières at the end of the road.

(S/E) Walk through the hamlet of Les Fonts and turn right onto theGR®58. After the bridge, leave the sign for Col de Malrif on your left and continue due south. After a short climb followed by an almost level stretch, you’ll reach the footbridge over the Torrent de Venton.

(1) Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead on theGR® (red and white markings). Follow the Ravin des Chalmettes stream along its right bank. After a steep climb with a few hairpin bends, you’ll reach the Col de Péas.

(2) Leave theGR® here and turn left onto the ridge path; this path is easy to follow although sometimes poorly marked. After a short climb, reach the summit of the Grand Vallon.

(3) Continue along the ridge, alternating between short descents and climbs, passing the Col Gourdin before reaching the Pic de Fond Queyras.

(4) Continue due east until you reach the cairn at the Col de la Crousette.

(5) Begin the descent here by turning left. There is no path here, but the descent is obvious as it is clearly visible; initially through a sort of scree slope, but gradually regaining the mountain pasture at the Venton marshes.

(6) Make your way zigzagging across the mountain pasture, keeping away from the Ravin du Venton. Then return to its left bank and follow it to reach the footbridge you crossed on the way up.

(1) Turn right and retrace your steps along the path you took on the way there to return to the car park next to the Refuge des Fonts de Cervières (S/E).

(6) Please note: the marshes here are very often dry; do not look for a body of water.

Important note regarding the return journey:

Between (5) and (1) The suggested route is not set in stone; it can be completely different, bearing in mind, however, that between these two points, there are as many routes as there are hikers. In any case, there is no danger here directly linked to off-trail walking. Of course, an incident may occur, but no more so than elsewhere.

A very pleasant hike, the main attraction of which is the wild route along the ridges between the Peas Pass and the Crousette Pass, with breathtaking views of Rochebrune as soon as you turn around
There is indeed a large herd of sheep and Patou dogs in the Vallon, Cros, one of which followed us all the way up the valley after point 4 to keep an eye on us, but it must be said that it seemed friendly
My son, who was bitten by dogs once and attacked by a Patou a second time in my presence, was really not very reassured...

A magnificent hike with superb views and a beautiful mountain atmosphere. This route is best suited to experienced walkers who are used to hiking off the beaten track.
For the route, I recommend:
- at the Col de Peas, follow the cairned path to a small rocky outcrop, then climb up until you rejoin the ridge path, which first leads to the top of the large valley
- at the Col de la Crousette, head to the Vallon sheepfold, a white hut from which an easy-to-follow trail will take you back to the GR.

A brilliant walk. But we were forced to turn back at the summit of Pic de Fond Queyras, due to the threat of a storm and a flock of several hundred sheep blocking the path at the pass and at the summit of La Crousette. We’ll return to the pass, from the footbridge, to take in the view of the rest of the ridge towards Petit Rochebrune, especially as the GR path towards the Col de Péas is in a dreadful state for several hundred metres.
