Description of the walk

Park at the Bourgea car park, the penultimate hamlet before Les Fonts de Cervières.
(S/E) Take the wide track opposite the car park, cross the Cervereytte and follow theGR®58Variant, which climbs steeply through the woods. The well-marked path winds its way up to a cable-assisted section that presents absolutely no difficulty.

(1) Once past the cable, you’ll reach a vast mountain pasture. The slope levels off before rising sharply again to the left of the Lac des Cordes spillway.

(2) Go round the lake to the right and find an unmarked path that climbs first through alpine pastures and then up the scree. On the attached map, the paths leading to the Escalinade are not shown, but they run all the way along.

(3) Pass in front of Lac de L’Étoile, turning left at a 90° angle, and continue the ascent to the Col de Chaudemaison.

(4) Take the path on the left and, via a few tight hairpin bends, reach the Turge de la Suffie, passing between two large rocks.

(5) Continue down a gentle slope and then up a slight incline to the Escalinade.

(6) For the return journey, follow the same route until you look out over the Lac des Cordes.

(3) Turn right onto the almost level path leading to the Col des Marsailles.

(7) Here, you’ll rejoin theGR®58variant which, via a short descent through the mountain pasture, meets the mainGR®58at the footbridge as it climbs to the Col de Péas.

(8). Turn left onto this path to reach Les Fonts de Cervières.

(9) Take theGR®58variant again, crossing La Cervereytte and following the left bank to reach the footbridge from the outward journey, then head back up to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources on this route apart from the water from the torrents, which can be used provided there are no herds present.
There is no shelter either.
The Escalinade offers a superb view of the Pic de Rochebrune, the dominant feature of this area on the border between the Queyras and the Briançonnais.

Worth a visit

Briançon and its forts.
The Col d’Izoard, the ultimate cycling pass, where, on the descent towards Brunissard, lies the famous Casse Déserte and the memorial to two great cyclists: the Italian Fausto Coppi and the Frenchman Louison Bobet.

This is our fifth edition in 10 years. The climb between the Col de Chaudemaison and the Turge de la Suffie is a bit of a slog. The return route between points 3 and 7 isn’t signposted, but the app makes it easy to follow. A walk best suited to experienced walkers. We’d love to see you there ❤️.

Thanks for the hiking suggestion. There really was a path all the way along.
I only made it as far as the Turge de la Suffie. There was snow from the Col de Chaudemaison onwards, and too much snow to walk along the ridge between the two peaks.
Kind regards

A route taking in a number of lakes and leading to two peaks offering stunning panoramic views
of the Écrins, the Queyras and the Cerces.

I’ve made a video, labelling the peaks, which shows our route and captures the mountain atmosphere of this stunning trail.

Signposting is in place as described in the route description between:
- the start and Lac des Cordes (GR and PR markings), i.e. red and white and yellow,
- the Col des Marsailles and the car park (GR markings),
the rest of the walk is not signposted; only a few cairns guide walkers, but the path is clearly marked.
Enjoy your walk.
