Short walk around Léoncel

A short, easy walk offering various views of Léoncel. Generally very easy, except for the final stretch with the descent from Franchelongue, which may be tricky for children or those with mobility issues.

Description of the walk

Park in the Léoncel car park, in front of the inn.

(S/E) Take the road northwards, towards Saint-Jean-en-Royans.

(1) Head up to the far left, towards the Col de Tourniol. Continue straight on until the first hairpin bend, without following theGR® which climbs to the right.

(2) Leave the road and take the forest track opposite. Follow this track downhill to the D70. Cross the road very carefully and walk along the right-hand side, heading south towards La Vacherie, for a few dozen metres.

(3) Take the path on the left, running perpendicular to the road, which heads towards the forest and joins the GRP®.

(4) Follow it to the left, along the edge of the forest, and continue straight on, going deeper into the forest. You must close the gate behind you.

(5) At Franchelongue, continue along theGR® to the left, heading down towards Bérangeon and then towards Léoncel.

(1) Take the road on the left to return to the car park (S/E).

A very pleasant walk around Leoncel with magnificent scenery: mountains and cow pastures. Car park at the foot of the Leoncel inn. No difficulty.

Just what we needed: a short, easy walk with little or no elevation gain before heading for lunch at the Auberge de Léoncel. We did it in August (it’s best to do this walk in the summer in the opposite direction, as the trees provide shade!). We did it as a round trip, as the stretch across the field and the final few metres along the road were too sunny.

An easy and pleasant walk, especially during a heatwave – a cool escape guaranteed.
Don’t miss the abbey, which is well worth a visit.

A short, gentle walk.
Beautiful scenery; the route often passes through the Leoncel forest, so the walk is in the shade. You can finish the walk at the 12th-century Cistercian abbey of Leoncel.
